#1zombiegleemaxMay 30, 2004 8:04:12 | You know, everyone pronounces things differently, but my son is discovering D&D for the first time and as he reads through our reference materials, he comes up with some 'alternate' pronounciations of some words that I've taken for granted... How do you prounounce: Iuz? (to me, at always rhymed with 'pud' in pudding) Lycanthrope? (lie-can'-throw-pee?) Nyrond? (near'-und) Keoland? (Key'-o-land) Furyondy (Fur'-un-dee) Nyr Dyv? (Nur-div) Correct me or give me new ideas! |
#2eric_anondsonMay 30, 2004 9:03:15 | My pronouciations are: EYE-ooze (Lycanthrope you can find in a dictionary. Or just try dictionary.com) NIE-rond KEE-oh-land FYOO-ree-UND-ee near-div Regards, Eric Anondson |
#3zombiegleemaxMay 30, 2004 14:31:41 | For me: EYE OOZE NYE ROND KEY OH LUND FUR YON DEE NER DIV |
#4zombiegleemaxMay 30, 2004 17:10:43 | Oh Is somebody know where I can get official transcription for Greyhawk lands? And is anybody knows how is "ch" pronounced in Sterich? Like in cheese or like in character? |
#5zombiegleemaxMay 30, 2004 17:36:34 | I pronounce it STEER ICK. |
#6cwslyclghMay 31, 2004 19:47:20 | here is how I say them... Iuz? (EYE-uz... although officialy I think it is EYE-ooze) Lycanthrope? (LYE-can-thrope rymes with rope) Nyrond? (NEAR-ond) Keoland? (KEE-oh-land) Furyondy (FURRY-on-dee) Nyr Dyv? (neer DEEV) Sterich (STAIR-ick) |
#7zombiegleemaxMay 31, 2004 21:30:06 | Eye-ooz... I like that. I guess me and the kids I grew up with made up our pronounciations back in the mid-80's and they are stuck in my head. But, Eye-ooz makes sense... |
#8zombiegleemaxJun 01, 2004 1:19:09 | Iuz? ee-uzz Lycanthrope? lie-can-thrup Nyrond? Near-und Keoland? Cow-laned Furyondy? Fore-ond-ey Nyr Dyv? Neer-Deev |
#9boz_shulunJun 01, 2004 10:24:18 | Here's what we use: Iuz: Eye-ooze Lycanthrope: Lie-can-thrope (rhyming with dope) Nyrond: Nie-rond (nie rhyming with eye) Keoland: Key-o-land Furyondy: Fur-e-ondy Nyr Dyv: Near Div (div rhyming with shiv) Sterich: Stair-itch Suel: Sool Verbobonc: Vair-bo-bonk (or when we are goofing Vair-bear-bo… with a swarthy French accent) Dramidj: Draw-midge |

#11cwslyclghJun 01, 2004 23:14:31 | EYE-uz (as in the word us with a zz sound replacing the ss) is different then EYE-ooze which sounds like the words eye and ooze stuck together. |
#12cwslyclghJun 01, 2004 23:15:56 | By the way there are Temple of Elemental Evil vidio game. Some of names are pronounced there. and we should rely upon thier pronouncement why? the BG series was notorius for miss-pronouncing stuff... why shoudl ToEE be any different? |

#14IncanusJun 04, 2004 11:00:30 | While we're on the subject, what about Rauxes? For such an important site, I have no idea how to pronounce it. Is it "RAWKS"? Or maybe "RAWK-zis"? Also, Geoff. Is it "JEE-off" or "JEFF"? |
#15zombiegleemaxJun 04, 2004 11:17:29 | I believe Geoff is pronounced Jeff like the name of the guy that played in Gary's game. I pronounce it Joff just because I think it sounds better or at least it sounds more other worldly. |
#16zombiegleemaxJun 04, 2004 17:43:14 | I believe Rauxes is pronounced RAW zeez. |
#17boz_shulunJun 04, 2004 18:52:55 | We’ve used: Rauxes: Rocks-es Geoff: Gee-off Although I guess it really depends what part of the Flanaess you come from. |
#18gadodelJun 13, 2004 21:34:34 | Originally posted by cwslyclgh quite close to my own pronunciations... |
#19telasJun 16, 2004 3:08:06 | This is from the febrile mind of a 16 year old who played it back in the mid 80s.... My current attempts follow, if they're different. Iuz: eye-uzz, but slurred together so it's almost one syllable with no accent, like a deep southerner saying "I wuz". Today, I'd pronounce it, "Sauron". Nyrond: nigh-ROND. Rhymes with "high WAND". Today, NEE-rond. Keoland: KEY-oh-land. Today, KAY-oh-land. Furyondy: fyur-YON-dee. Today, fur-YON-dee. Nyr Dyv: nur div (try not to laugh). Today, neer deev. Sterich: ster-IK or ste-RIK. Geoff: soft g. ZJOFF. Rauxes: RAWK-zes. Today, rau-ZAYS. Telas |

#21zombiegleemaxJun 18, 2004 12:42:21 | The 2E player's guide to Greyhawk had several pronunciation transcriptions for countries, names, etc. Check there if you like. |
#22robbastardJun 19, 2004 15:22:25 | Iuz: EEEE-uz or "yooz" Lycanthrope: lie-can thrope (the last syllablerhymes with 'rope') Nyrond: NYE-rond Keoland: Key-o-land Furyondy: Fer-YON-dee Nyr Dyv: Neer Dive Sterich: Stair-itch Suel: Sool (rhymes with 'cool') Verbobonc: Verb-oh-bonk Drawmidj: draw-midge Geoff: Jeff Rauxes: Rocks-ziz, Rowks-ziz, or Rouses |
