Remember, a Dragon Mage is a sorcerer who has bonded with a dragon, gaining additional arcane power due to this bond. Dragon Mystics: The entry for Dragon Mages in Heroes of Sorcery hints that a Dragon Mystic combination might be possible. This would be similar to the Dragon Mage, where the dragon has inherent mystic levels rather than inherent sorcerer levels. Dragon Cleric: I’m not sure how this would work. Maybe a cleric of Paladine who bonds with a dragon of light. It’s hard to imagine a dragon with a medallion of faith, though. I’d probably err on the side of the Dracolyte from the Draconomicon rather than have a cleric bond with a dragon. Dragon Druid: Er….hrm. I dunno, I just can’t see this too much. You would pretty much have to eliminate the druid’s animal companion in favor of the dragon, then the druid loses a ton of abilities. Plus the dragon would have to be into nature magic, which I’m not sure I see either. Dragon Wizard: This is a tough one. On the one hand, it’s the same concept as a Dragon Mage – an arcane caster that draws strength from a dragon. At the same time, the two types of arcane magic being used are different. Would the dragon take wizard levels? Would a dragon have to take the Test? That seems awfully improbable to me. I have a feeling the Orders of High Sorcery wouldn’t know quite how to handle a dragon in their midst. Then there’s other spellcasters, like bards, rangers, and paladins. As they’re not fully dedicated to magic, I don’t really count them. Really, I can see the Dragon Mage and the Dragon Mystic, but not much beyond. What do you guys think? |

The idea never struck me before reading this post, but now that I think about it, it brings up some interesting possibilities. What about a Dragon Cleric situation in which the Cleric draws all of their magic from a dragon? A friend and I were having a debate the other day about whether or not you could consider Malys and the other Dragon Overlords demi- or pseudo-gods. I believe that their level of poewr indicates you could...after all, Takhisis was wary of confronting Malys in her weakened state, and thus the AoM continued as it did for so long. So what if the Dragon Cleric was a worshipper of that specific Dragon? In this instance, we can assume most likely that it would have to be an Overlord, and not a Krynn Dragon, considering the levels of power and such. This would not only give the character the ability to draw from the Dragon, but also provide a vital link between that ability and the Cleric class/spell list. |
