Distances on The Outlands

I'm about to DM my first campaing using the planescape setting but the only PS material I got is the basic box and the monster appendix I. My question is: are distances on the outlands always the same and is it a finite plane? I mean, I'd figure it'd be something like: if you wanted to travel from Ribcage to Plague-Mort, for example, the distance between them would be infinite but once you get on your horses and start riding you'd get the eventually. Is this right? What's your take on the matter?

Dunno if I managed to express myself well enough.

Thanks in advance

In Planescape, traveling the Outlands always takes a random amount of time- 3d6 days. Whenever a PC wants to walk, or ride, (a horse doesn't make traveling any quicker in the Outlands) just roll 3d6 for every landmark they have to cross to reach their destination.

Example: To get from Hopeless to Rigbcage, you have to pass Torch first- so it'd take 3d6 days to get from Hopless to Torch, then another 3d6 days to get from Torch to Ribcage.

If I were GMing a game, I'd use a varient of the Elsium travel system where you get to your location faster if you reflect on the nature of the location. For example, you'd get to Bedlam faster by acting insane, get to Curst by feeling trapped, and get to Tradegate by being industrius (say, whittling while you walked).

But that could just be me.

In my campaign I use 2d6 instead of 3, and don't bother with the landmarks thing. Wether you're going from tradegate to plague-mort or faunel, it ends up taking 2d6 days. The only exception is for frequently travelled trading routes, which tend to take a more set amount of time, though it still varies somewhat. I figure the more constantly a certain route is taken, the closer it comes to being known the whole way, and thus a more certain amount of time. It helps trade out, and the players can either take 2d6 days to get where they're going, or hook up with a trade caravan (and probably fight off some form of raider on the journey). Caravans typically take 5-10 days in my game to get where they're going, along established routes.

This only holds true if you're going around the outlands, not spireward or away-from-spire-ward. That takes a whole heck of a lot longer, and I think that's supported in the books. I'd look it up, but my books are all the way on the other side of the room, and I haven't finished my coffee yet. I recall seeing somewhere that it could take months to get from the outermost ring all the way to the base of the spire.
