Hello.

Does anybody have a list of military ranks of the Great Kingdom/Ahlissa. I'm currently writing some fluff for my campaign but I don't think plain old sergeant, lieutenant, etc would sound very nice.

I tried looking from Canonfire but didn't find anything.

All help is appreciated.

From the 1980 folio, in ascending order of rank:

Knight
Knight Bachelor
Knight Companion
Knight Banneret
Knight Commander

I don't know enough about precedence and titles, though, to know where these various ranks fall with respect to titles like General, for example, or what other military ranks would be the right flavor....

Sources such as Ivid the Undying, The History of the Greyhawk Wars and the first Gord the Rogue novel Tale of Old City (the chapter on the battle in the Adri) mention some ranks - but mainly stuff like Captain-General or Baron-General.

In LG Onnwal we tried to Old Oeridan-ise the ranks as follows:

Sergeant - Sertern; commands a Sertad (squad)
Captain - Altern; commands an Altad (column)
Brigadier - Bratern; commands a Braetad (brigade)
General - Har-Altern; commands 4 Braetads or an Army.

Overall command of the Army of Rebellion is in the hands of the Lord Marshal (currently a certain Rakehell Chert), who reports directly to the Szek (Jian Destron) - who commands all the military forces of the Free State.

Can't recall off the top of my head how many men are in each of those units, but check the LG Onnwal Metagaming Book (recently revamped by my esteemed colleague Mr Stevie S., occasionally of this parish).

FYI, I also remembered the wonderful Frances & Joseph Gies books, including The Knight in History, which might prove useful for historical research: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0709023707/qid=1087105511/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/103-5817624-9228664?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Thanks for the help. I think Woesingers post was very helpful.
