Well, my advice - think less of character generation in terms of numbers, and more in developing a personality, background, and motivation for an individual. the numbers and statistics should just flow from that afterwards.

I haven't designed PCs in years, but when I make a NPC I begin by giving him the classes I think he should have and the actual numbers come at the same time the story does and they feed on each other. I make the numbers fit the story and the story fit the numbers until I arrive at an equilibrium and I'm satisfied the character can hold his own both in the number and story departments.

Ok i agree with you but i've never played DS yet and i have to create my first character. As i don't know DS world much i need advise.
I mean is Survival so important : it seems to but...

Are DS campaings and adventures mainly outdoor ?
So is a Crodlu as steed a good choice ?

Is Endurance a good feat to have, considering DS seems a though world ?

What adventuring gear is good to buy ?

Do you have info on Pterrans ? I don't know much from the rules description...

etc....

I dont have any of the books with me so wont be all that accurate help but heres some thoughts.

I think you should have more skill points in heal and spot, maybe a few less in survival?

I cant remember what the endurance feat does but you might want to plan for the future with that feat, maybe get a prerequisite for a feat you want later.

If you have natural attacks you might be able to get a feat related to that, maybe something from savage species.

Youd have to organise with your DM what sort of stuff you can buy, he might let you have magic items, or maybe not.

Your stats are pretty good, wisdom and con especially. I can imagine your character, been a druid, was the "Shaman's Pet" - the young pterran been brought up to inherit the position of tribe shaman. With your high wisdom and constitution and (relatively) lower intelligence i imagine the pterran would be a slow moving, zen type. You dont rush into anything, you think things through before acting - you intuit most things and trust your first impressions.

Just some ideas, remember you dont need a huge background at first, just some ideas for your character, how he looks, how he acts, after you've played a bit you'll have more of an idea.

Also is your whole party starting out new or are you joining an existing group??

First Thanks for you advise

The whole group is new. We are an old group of school days RPG friends that wants to get back to the old D&D feeling, after playing almost all RPGs (mainly Vampire, and The funniest of the best, In nomine Satanis/ Magne Veritas, which is a french game . We are kind old now (above 30) for RPg players and we want to recall the old days at college when we all banded together to play endless hours.
So instead of playing FR or other traditionnal world settings we want to explore Dark Sun. We know a litle about it through the Spell Fire card game.
So the group is all new including the DM which never masterized any DS games.

You wont have to work out how you just happened to meet them in the desert
The DS MC talks about pterrans on the Way of the Druids going on sort of life-quests by themselves without equipment and living as one with nature (something like native american spirit quests i imagine).
Maybe your pterran has gone out on something similar to a life-quest, and is experiencing life outside of his tribe (pterrans think they are the best race, so it could be a shock to your pterran to meet other races that are as smart/strong as you are).

You might return to your tribe with different opinions of humans/elves etc or maybe it will reinforce the stereotype of thieving elves, cannibal halflings, greedy humans.

Or you might run into a nightmare beast and be a snack, its a harsh world after all

i could email you the MC article on pterrans if you want.

I would be gratefull to you if you do.
I'm desperatly tryiong to find info on pterrans but they seem to pop out of nowhere in Athas.org rules. I don't see any sign of this race in D&D 2 Ds books. I can't find any drawing of Petrrans too

I tend to agree with Xlor, here. You will have far more fun if you design a personality and then drop in the points to fit. I don't think I've ever made a character (or NPC, since I'm usually always the GM) that did not have some fatal flaw built in. This is a game of fantasy and heroism - not perfection. If you get wrapped up in the numbers, it becomes more about competition than having fun. Inevitably what happens is players arguing with one another and claiming "my character can beat up your character." You may not want it to happen, it may not happen, but it becomes more likely when you design a character around the numbers.

Sure you know all that, but that's the bit I give to all my players when they start.

If you can find DarkSun for AD&D 2nd, (revised edition) This campain setting has the old publishing of pterrans... Also the Complete Gladiotor Handbook has an interesting paragraph on them, And Finally the first Darksun Monster manual has info. Um, Like I said that is all second ed, but it should help you to understand your race. If you need me to type up the info and send it to you I will.... But catch me before the weekend takes off

Drop Grummore an email about Pterrans. He was working on a little netbook about them (read some of the preliminary stuff, not too shabby either). Nor sure how far along he is on it, but I'm sure he'd be willing to send out what he's gotten so far.
