Hi all,

Several spells such as Chill or Heat metal seem almost useless in DS world.
They should be replaced by other more relevant ones.

What do you think and what do you propose ?

I'd propose checking out the rules as presented by Athas.org, which is the site with the officially sanctioned rules conversion for Dark Sun, as well as where new official material is released from. While I;m not familiar as to if they actually detail those spells and change them, there are a slew of other ones that they cave converted/changed to fit the setting, and are found in their core rules download. The rules from athas.org represents hard work done by many members of the community who have struggled with bringing Dark Sun to life for 3/3.5e D&D for the last four years. And while some things have been slightly altered from the original books, they mainly keep the same flavor and feel for Dark Sun as was presented in the 2nd Edition materials.

The other official conversion, released by Paizo and released in articles in their magazines "Dragon" and "Dungeon" are equally official, but were not nearly worked on as long, and lack a substantial amount of depth to them. Further, there have been a detailed, and exhaustive list of errors from the Dark Sun articles found in those magazines that have been discussed so much on these forums, and have risen so many arguements and tempers, that the primary result of this ruleset has been a schism and strong division between the fans of Dark Sun, a deeper division than any other material's errors have provided.

However, the common solution that is provided for this is - take what you want from both versions, and do with them as you will.

According to Athas.org rules, Chill and Heat Metal spells are neither removed nor replaced.

I'll mail them to ask if it was done purposely or if it was just something they forgot to think about...

Anyway that would be cool to have the same kind of spells but related to Animal Shells, Bone or Stone as most armors and weapons are made from these materials.
That would mostly preserve the spirit of theses spells and adapt them to Athas world.

Hmm.... well, probably wasn't added, or it was overlooked. There is a thread about how to submit information/errata stickied at the top you might wanna look at.]

In the meantime, I'd say that if you want it in your game, go ahead and add it

Why should it be removed? Mages do not un-create a spell because the opportunity for application gets scarce. The may forget the spell but you can still find it in old tomes.

I just mean that the spell could possibly have never been created in this world as it is poor in metal.

In the old times, Athas has metal just like a normal world.

By the way in the Might and Magic CRPGs there was a spell called Shrapmetal. It conjured hot, jagged metal pieces in a cone, and was pretty powerful. It can have a usage in Dark Sun as there are a lot of monsters with /metal DR. A perfect tool to hunt braxats...

Ok then i could have been created and abandonned later as it was'nt usefull anymore. Who would teach or learn a spell that is useless ?

Why and how has the metal disapeared ?

It was used up during the Cleansing Wars. There are most likely vast vaults of metal stored deep beneath the ground - my guess would be buried under tons of rock, due to structural damage from massive cave-ins as Borys was hunting down the Dwarves. Other metal reserves are in the royal vaults (if there is any) for each Sorcerer-King. The remainder still is around, but highly prized and usually kept safe. Heck, even in the Prism Pentad - they reveal one location where there's a vault of all kinds of metal. Tyr has an Iron mine, but on other worlds, it would have been abandoned millenia ago.
