#1cmrscorpioJun 23, 2004 20:41:37 | I was going through a stack of some of my old D&D notes when I happened upon an incomplete listing of the kinds of music that I thought the average member of each faction might listen to. I thought that someone here might like to see what my thoghts might be or have some ideas for the factions I don't have anything for. Here's what I've got: Bleak Cabal - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica, or whiney country music. Doomguard - Thrash or Death metal Dustmen - either the Cure or Marilyn Manson. Whatever goth people listen to. Fated - 80s yuppie music Fraternity of Order - rigidly structured classical Free League - whatever they feel like, berk Harmonium - Bad Boys (Theme song from Cops) Revolutionary League - some folksy 60s revolution subculture Sign of the One - current pop music Society of Sensation - every type Transcendent Order - Jazz Xaositects - I don't see them as music listeners, but i imagine they would listen to people who really can't play or sing, like the really horrible people who are shown on American Idol as the worst of the worst. The factions I don't have anything for are : Athar Believers of the Source Mercykillers |
#2zombiegleemaxJun 23, 2004 23:02:37 | Free League- I Ain't Got No (Planar Faction) by the Portalin' Stones I imagine the Harmonium and Mercykillers would be big on march music. |
#3Shemeska_the_MarauderJun 23, 2004 23:18:15 | Mercykillers = the Imperial Death March ;) |
#4friendlyfiendJun 24, 2004 4:40:18 | Showing my age here but ... Bleak Cabal? Anything by Nick Cave. "Across the Universe" by The Beatles. For the optimists among them (of whom there are more than you might think), "Always look on the bright side of life" by Monty Python. Also, Attilla the Stockbroker has pointed out that Motorhead's Ace of Spades is the world's most existentialist song, so that might do ... ideally sung by Jean Paul Sartre Xaositects - I Am The Walrus - The Beatles, any of Stanley Unwin's stuff from Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by the Small Faces Sensates - Senses Working Overtime - XTC Doomguard - This Corrosion by The Sisters of Mercy (in fact, quite a lot of The Sisters' output seems to fit the bill) Dustmen - River of No Return by Ghostdance Athar - Dear God by XTC Free League - I'm Free (To Do What I Want) by the Soup Dragons Fated - Big Time by Peter Gabriel |
#5sildatorakJun 24, 2004 11:31:41 | Athar - The God That Failed by Metallica Doomguard - Behind Space by In Flames (the last line of the song is "They're pulling down the stars; they're going to pull it down.") |
#6zombiegleemaxJun 24, 2004 14:59:30 | Here's my ideas... Fraternity of Order- Philip Glass's opera Eintstein on the Beach Xaositects- Same as above... If you've never heard it, really check it out... and see how it applies to both so well... Doomsguard- Franz Ferdinard- "This Fire"... pretty cool new song... Sign of One- David Bowie- The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars... Talk about one solipsistic mofo... Bleakers- Sonic Youth The Fated- My band (which is a cop out) because we've got an awesome song about our ambitious Duke... Sensates- The Doors... try everything AT LEAST once... Anarchists- Rage against the machine, of course... Dustmen- most recent "Sounds of the Whales" release. $8.99 at Target. Indeps- Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Postal Service, Flaming Lips, or anything else that's self proclaimed Indie... Harmonium- Britney Spears... everyone must conform... Mercykillers- no sodding idea... ---------- BTW- Nick Cave for the Dustmen was a very good idea... |
#7sildatorakJun 24, 2004 15:51:55 | Here's a Metallica song (or songs) for as many factions as I could think of one that fit them: Bleak Cabal - The Frayed Ends of Sanity Doomguard - Blackened or Damage, Inc Dustmen - To Live is to Die Fated - No Remorse or Carpe Diem, Baby Free League - Don't Tread on Me or Escape Harmonium - Nothing Else Matters Revolutionary League - King Nothing or …And Justice for All Sign of the One - Better than You Athar - Leper Messiah, Cure, Phantom Lord, etc. Mercykillers - Fixxxer |
#8zombiegleemaxJun 25, 2004 12:52:22 | Here's a few i thought i'd toss out, as they rather amuse me Bleakers- Ramones, I wanna be sedated Signers- The Cure, Pictures of you (come on, just for the line "i've been looking so long at these pictures of you, i can almost believe that they're real) Doomguard- just about anything off Black Sabbath's Paranoid album Sensate's- Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire |
#9factol_rhys_dupJun 25, 2004 16:35:47 | Oh sure, sometimes I listen in jazz clubs, but mostly I sit in a dark room and listen to radio static. Mmmmm.... static.... |

#11mithral_icesilver_02Jun 26, 2004 14:48:22 | Athar - Heaven (Can't remember this artist, either) Bleakers - Unwell (I forget the artist) Godsmen - Calling all Angels (Train) Xaositects - Another Postcart (BNL) (Another postcard/With chimpanzees/And everyone is/Addressed to me...) Signers - When I Look to the Sky (Train) Probably Bleakers or Mercykillers - Bright Lights (Santana) Guvners - I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General (Gilbert and Sullivan, The Pirates of Penzance) Indeps - Big Yellow Taxi (My memory is horrible, init?) |
#12zombiegleemaxJun 28, 2004 15:31:30 | Well you can tell everyone I'm a darn disgrace Drag my name all over the place I don't care anymore You can tell everybody 'bout the state I'm in You won't catch me crying 'cos I just can't win I don't care anymore I don't care anymore, D'you hear? Sounds like the Bleakers have got to Phil Collins! |
#13zombiegleemaxJun 30, 2004 16:05:10 | Mind you, I realise the futility of existance after listening to Phil Collins, so perhaps HE got to the Bleakers... *grins* I see the Believers of the Source backing every novelty record that gets released. There has to be some reason why those things get to number one... |
#14tasyrjamakiJul 01, 2004 16:20:36 | Fated: Cheap Trick - Reach Out |
#15tasyrjamakiJul 01, 2004 16:21:58 | Fated: Cheap Trick - Reach Out, or the Free League maybe |
#16zombiegleemaxJul 01, 2004 17:56:06 | I used to play a Sensate (Fighter/Cleric) whose theme song was Meat Loaf - "Original Sin". "I've been looking for an original sin One with a twist and a bit of a spin And since I've done all the old ones Till they've all been done in Now I'm just looking - Then I'm gone with the wind - Endlessly searching for an original sin" |

#22wyvern76Jul 06, 2004 22:19:48 | Surprised that no-one has suggested this so far: Athar - Losing My Religion |

#27xaxorJul 09, 2004 20:46:11 | Mithral Do you mean Heaven, by Warrant? I've got a picture of your house and you're standing by the door. It's black and white and faded, and it's looking pretty worn. That one? |
#28cthulu_mtJul 10, 2004 10:41:07 | Bleakers.......Paint it Black |
#29mithral_icesilver_02Jul 10, 2004 11:55:00 | No, I mean "Heaven" by Live: I'll believe it when I see it for myself. I don't need no one To tell me 'bout heaven ... That one. |
#30cmrscorpioJul 12, 2004 11:41:17 | most songs by Nevermore seems to fit the Bleakers quite well. Nevermore's "Poison Godmachine" seems pretty appropriate for the Athar. "Do you believe everything you see? Children of the void come follow me Denounce your faith and penance the savior is unseen Poison is a word, God is a word used for fear" Nevermore's "I, Voyager" seems to fit well for the Sensates. "I am the voyager I have tasted pleasures of the flesh And drunk the pleasures of the mind To reach the point I've attained Clear focused and defined If you live life draped in sorrow You will destroy the path we follow Take my hand and walk in wonder The patterns spin in random order" |
#31lord_of_the_ninth_02Jul 13, 2004 5:08:01 | Unwell is by Matchbox 20. This thread seems like a really good idea, there is probably no better way to explain some factions than through music. |
#32zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2004 16:22:20 | There are more than a few Evanescence songs which would work for the Bleakers, frankly... And Wither's "Human Condition" never fails to make me think of the Athar, even though it's probably not quite the best song for them.. the "rage against organized religion" theme is certainly there, though. "So you think you found the truth Told to you by a man But the man he has a god That he'll never understand" It also reminds me of yugoloths, but I can't really explain where THAT association is coming from. |
#33ohtar_turinsonJul 20, 2004 16:58:14 | Xaositects- REM Disturbance at the Heron House "The followers of chaos, out of control" |
#34wyvern76Jul 27, 2004 3:40:19 | Thought of a new one for the Ciphers today: Ain't nothing gonna break my stride Nobody's gonna slow me down Oh no, I've got to keep on moving Ain't nothing gonna break my stride I'm running and I won't touch ground Oh no, I've got to keep on moving... Wyvern |
#35zombiegleemaxJul 31, 2004 4:10:10 | Hi, I'm a n00b. Commence fruit pelting. This song, Kneel to the Cross by Sol Invictus (although I prefer Agalloch's cover) reminds me of the Athar simply because it points out the rampant hypocricy in an organized religion. http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/agalloch/ofstonewindandpillor.html#4 By the way, since this is my first post, I figure this is a good place to ask a question. Is it possible to have a custom avatar, perhaps after a certain number of posts, or are we stuck with the list? |

#38zombiegleemaxJul 31, 2004 4:10:41 | Ooookay. Apparently, I got some sort of error where it just posted without notifying me, and displayed this as the page simply not shifting. I apologize profusely. Boy, this is really the wrong foot to start on, huh? |
#39incenjucarJul 31, 2004 5:42:09 | Xaostects: Imperial Death March, followed by Twinkle Twinkle Little Star followed by the sound of eggs being thrown at monkies followed by a nap on some half-rotted flour sacks. |
#40lord_of_the_ninth_02Jul 31, 2004 23:28:02 | MasterGrazzt, there is indeed a better place to ask that. I believe it's called the Meta Board. However, since I haven't been there since they changed servers I really couldn't tell you how to find it. And because almost every lemon asks that question I'll just tell you. You cannot get your own custom avatar unless you win a contest (I believe UnCon gives this away), become a moderator or do some great service for the boards (like make an exceptionally useful FAQ or the like, they don't give these out much), or get on the staff of WotC. Other than that your pretty much out of luck. However the selection en't too bad on the normal list, so I'm not complaining. Oh yeah, and welcome to the boards. -Your amicable neighborhood Archdevil. |
#41zombiegleemaxAug 01, 2004 8:47:24 | I'm Going Slightly Mad by Queen for the Xaosects. I've always thought a good theme for the Baatezu as a race is "Princes of the Universe" by Queen, with a few tweaks... Here we are, born to be Kings, we're the Princes of the Multiverse I am Immortal, I have inside me Blood of kings |
#42zombiegleemaxAug 01, 2004 14:08:47 | If we're going to include fiends as well as factions, "I Love it When I'm Naughty" strikes me as being particularly well suited to Shemeshka. |
#43zombiegleemaxAug 04, 2004 10:03:35 | Nah, "I want to be Evil" by Eartha Kitt for Shemmy. |

#46voldenuitAug 07, 2004 19:23:58 | Athar: It Ain't Necessarily So by George Gershwin "It ain't necessarily so The things that you're liable To read in thee Bible, It ain't necessarily so. Oh Jonah, he lived in a whale, For he made his home in That fish's abdomen. Oh Jonah, he lived in a whale. To get into Heaven Don' snap for a second ! Live clean ! Don' have no fault ! Oh, I takes that gospel Whenever it's pos'ble, But with a grain of salt." Harmonium: Yellow Submarine by The Beatles Bleakers: Violin Concerto No.1 by Shostakovich, or Cello Suite No. 2 by J.S. Bach, or Child Killers by the Delgados "Lately days all seem the same since I lost my brain Golden nights will see you through Darker days need glue How can I find what's right? The truth's our lives were shite What's the point to you? Goodbye wonder goodbye brain This life is insane No one here gets out alive Not for life you'd like" Xaositects: Sakikage Cromartie High Soundtrack (just listen to it!) Guvners: Schoenberg Sensates: Scriabin (preferably a full performance, with flashin lights and all) Ciphers: Tan Dung, freeform jazz, trance Fated: The original poster was right on with '80's pop music, can't beat that one.... #48voldenuitAug 07, 2004 22:43:33 | Originally posted by Wyvern76 Well, mainly for the discordance in the Shostakovich, and its departure from classical music progressions. While there are many more modern classical works that have gone down this road, this piece sticks out for me as one of the pioneers. For the Bach (for the more mellow Bleakers), probably in reference to Rosptropovich's (iirc) comment that he was playing this piece "for all the sad people in the world". |
#49mithral_icesilver_02Aug 13, 2004 16:29:56 | [IC] I'm going to be in either Arborea, Bahamut's Palace, Xaos, or the City of Glass for a few days, so I'm wracking my brains for a good song for A'kin. I was purposely being vague because if a certain other arcanoloth knew where I was, I wouldn't last a week. Meanwhile, the song "Fill it up" by Trout Fishing in America would probably be good for ... I'm getting thoughts of Xaositects and Guvners, and, strangely, eladrin. Can't figure that one out. I've got an ice cream cone, Gonna fill it up all the way to the bottom. Chocolate, strawberry, maybe vanilla And sprinkles if I got some. One scoop, two scoop, three scoop, four; If it were much bigger then I'd have more. It's cool and sweet and such a treat, I want to live on Ice Cream Street. If you go walkin' into the woods, You can only walk halfway in. 'Cause if you take just one more step You'll be walkin' out again. One step, two step, three step, four; If I lived here, I'd live outdoors. It's cool and green and I can't see The forest for the trees. Fill it up ... All the way to the bottom! I'm not ashamed ... But I'm not to proud. Half-remembered ... Yeah? Well that's half-forgotten. 'Cause halfway in Is halfway out. Seems like things were so much bigger, Back when I was smaller. Some things change while stayin' the same; Every day I get a little bit taller. One inch, two inch, three inch four; Farther and farther away from the floor. Up to the bottom, down to the top, I keep on growin' ;til I stop. Fill it up ... All the way to the bottom! I'm not ashamed ... But I'm not to proud. Half-remembered ... Yeah? Well that's half-forgotten. 'Cause halfway in Is halfway out. Half-remembered ... Yeah? Well that's half-forgotten. 'Cause halfway in Is halfway out. [/IC] |
