#2HalberkillJun 24, 2004 11:33:23 | elves - Celene, Principality of Ulek, Grandwood Forest, Vesve Forest, Valley of the Mage, Gamboge Forest dwarves- Duchy of Ulek, various small city states spread throughout the Flanaess drow - concentrated in the underdark of the Crystalmist Mountains, but with outposts in the Lortmils, Helfurnaces, Barrier Peaks, and Yatils. halflings - County of Ulek, various small halfling communities. gnomes - Flinty Hills, Kron Hills, Grossetgrottel. #3zombiegleemaxJun 25, 2004 12:58:38 | Didnt some gnomes and some valley elves also have the Valley of the Mage of something like that? |
#4samwiseJun 25, 2004 15:10:41 | Demihumans can be found throughout the Flanaess. If you want to know about particular nations ruled by demihumans, then the list is: Dwarves Principality of Ulek Elves Celene Sunndi Duchy of Ulek Halflings and Gnomes none As for larger numbers of such races, in the Sheldomar they are as follows: (large groups marked with *) Dwarves Bissel * Gran March * Geoff * Sterich ** County of Ulek * Yeomanry * Elves Keoland (Sylvan elves) Bissel Celene (Grey and Sylvan elves) ** Geoff (High Elves)* Gran March County of Ulek Duchy of Ulek (High and Sylvan elves) ** the Yeomanry (High elves) the Dreadwood (Syvan elves) * Gnomes Keoland Bissel Celene Geoff Gran March Sterich County of Ulek * Duchy of Ulek Principality of Ulek the Dreadwood Halflings Keoland * Bissel Celene * Geoff Gran March * Sterich County of Ulek *** Principality of Ulek * the Yeomanry ** the Dreadwood Note: Geoff and Sterich were before the wars. Presumably a number of those are now in Keoland or other nearby nations. Note: Gnomes and a subrace of Elves known as Valley Elves live in the Valley of the Mage. They are generally ostracised by other members of their kind for associating with Mage. |
#5mortellanJun 25, 2004 19:20:35 | Did anyone mention Highfolk/Highvale? Slightly off topic, has anyone ever play with the current population figures in the LGG vs older sources? Demihumans are way overpopulated from what they used to be. As an example, according to Sam's list elves are not prevalent in Furyondy and likewise in the 83 gazetteer elves in Furyondy aren't numbered. Overall demihuman figures are listed as 'some'. Then you go to the LGG and Furyondy's population of 1,480,000 includes 9% elves, that is a whopping 133,200 elves. According to the LGG Celene has a population of 140,000 of which 79% are elven or 110,600. In the 83 book Furyondy's population was a fourth what it is currently so even at those levels Furyondy's 'some' could outstrip Celene's measley listing of 17,500 elves but it was wisely left vague. Another quick GH population oddity: (83 set) South Province, Great Kingdom demi-humans 'doubtful', Idee demihuman 'some' and Medegia(only sylvan elves), Flinty Hills 'numerous halflings in south' and Hollow Highlands 'Some halflings' Hestmark highlands (none mentioned) (LGG) UK of Ahlissa, 9% halfling population or roughly 345,000. That's alot of halflings even if you consign them to just the hill regions bordering the kingdom. Them hobniz breed like rabbits. |
#6samwiseJun 25, 2004 19:26:44 | I took those from the '83 set. And they are only for the Sheldomar, I didn't include Furyondy or any other region. As for the discrepancies in the numbers, that is a side effect of both the general increase in populations, as well as the increase in the occurrence of demi-humans. If you want worse numbers, look in the GHG. (The "small" version of the world setting book for use with GH as the "default" setting.) Nations there follow the DMG guidelines for racial distribution, resulting in a general demihuman population explosion, and halflings breeding like roaches. |
#7zombiegleemaxJul 01, 2004 12:55:04 | Isnt Melf elven and in charge of his own lands? |
#8samwiseJul 01, 2004 13:19:55 | Melf is an Elf, but he does not rule any lands. He is a relative of Queen Yolande of Celene. She rules that nation. |
#9zombiegleemaxJul 01, 2004 13:24:59 | Does anyone know if Melf is a gray elf or a high elf? Do the grey elves have any lands that are detailed? |
#10samwiseJul 01, 2004 13:38:39 | Well since Celene is home to Sylvan and Grey Elves, I would expect that Queen Yolande is a Grey Elf. Sunndi is also noted as having Grey Elves for the population, so I would expect their King is a Grey Elf as well. |
#11HalberkillJul 01, 2004 13:45:46 | Originally posted by Amaron Blackthorn Melf is a grey elf, as is Queen Yolande. Though most of the elves of Celene are high elves. The grey elves of the Lendore Isles have recently removed all non-elven residents from their lands and made it an elf-only kingdom. Halber |
#12zombiegleemaxJul 02, 2004 9:43:09 | Hooray for the gray elves. They are the coolest non-drow elves around. |
#13faraerJul 03, 2004 13:01:59 | To quote Gary Gygax's long essay "To Forge a Fantasy World" in Horsemen of the Apocalypse:“Demi-humans” and “humanoids”—the mythological and fantastic peoples known as dwarves, elves, gnomes, hobgoblins, orcs, etc.—were just slipped into things by default. That is, the setting subsumed the lot had been there when the first human inhabitants came, and whatever prior history was particular to them, severally or jointly, was not known. At the time of introduction to the milieu, all records were of human origination, and included these non-human cousins to mankind in their pages only when such details related directly to human events. Thus, there are mountain dwarf kingdoms and wood elf enclaves implied by the encounter tables but not detailed in the lore. |
