Wondering what your thoughts were on this:

Does the D&D cartoon have a touch of greyhawk, or is it quite 'stand alone'?

Sad to say this was actually a topic at greychat thrusday. Yeah it had alot of GH stuff like bullywugs and such. What I think is more glaring is how Unearthed Arcana influenced the toon. Cavalier, Barbarian, Acrobat, etc.

Eh, at least it allowed us to see Warduke in action once

The world of the old D&D cartoon was NOT Greyhawk. For one, the cartoon world had FIVE suns. Second, the entire place was a prison of sorts as revealed in the script for the unproduced final episode, which you can find on Michael Reaves' homepage at http://www.mindspring.com/~michaelreaves/D&Dpreface.html

While the cartoon had a lot of monsters that were in Greyhawk, they took the monsters straight from the Monster Manual, Monster Manual II, and Fiend Folio....none of which were specifically Greyhawk.

Nor were there any Greyhawk-specific locations mentioned...ever...not even the City of Greyhawk itself. Instead, as its own world, it had its own myriad of bizarre locations.

Slightly off topic

The cartoon episodes are being released in the UK on DVD (I think the first season is out, with the other two to follow by September, with a compete boxed set in September).

However, they are all Region specific (European region) DVD's, so they won't play on your USA-bought DVD player.

Given this, it would seem only a matter of time before they are released in the US region format.

On thread,

No, it was not related to Greyhawk in any way. Although I would be interested to hear if anyone has incorporated an Energy Bow or Club of Strength into their campaigns. Players have likely clamored for them ever since 1983.

I thought it was unique with elements of the Realm of Greyhawk. Great Cartoon!

The ranger in the campaign I'm running just asked for an energy bow at our last session, although I think he was at least partly kidding. I have no intention of giving him one, and I think he knows it. That's probably why he has started showing interest in the arcane archer prestige class - he probably figures that's as close as he'll be able to get.

Eh, when 3E came out and I looked through the DMG, I was a bit surprised to discover the new "Brilliant Energy" weapons. At the time, I thought the author must have been a fan of the old cartoon :D

Thanks for the link! I always wondered how the adventures of the kids ended up.

Funny, there is a reference to the Sea of Sorrow. Maybe they were in Ravenloft all along :D

Actually there was one, when asked who won the world series, DM said it was the "Greyhawk Elves". Though strangely enough, in the reshowing of the cartoon on Cartoon Network, the line was changed to "greatwood elves" or something like that.

I know this because I have a tape of the original and the new cartoon network one.

Fox re-ran the episodes about four years ago, but it never aired on Cartoon Network. I taped a lot of the episodes that Fox re-ran, and the only change that I noticed was the new introductory sequence.

Which episode is this?

I've got the first two. They cover 7 episodes each. The second had a mention that 2 more DVDs would be released.

That's 28 episodes total, hardly 3 seasons .. unless they are planning for more

I thought the Cartoon Network did re-air or was it on Fox that they re-aired these just before the D&D movie came out? Just wonderin...

The new introduction used by Fox was just terrible. I wonder why they didnt use the originals. They were just so much better.

You are right, the ones I have are from Fox, with the crappy opening, though they were shown on Cartoon Network also, but I didn't record them, even though I watched them.

As to the episode....I think it was the one that had Lolth in it...not sure though, I would have to re-view them be certain. It was at the beginning of the episode, and I think it was the first season.

It was a first season episode in which dungeon master is captured by Warduke. And the question was directed at a "Know Tree" not DM. Also, as I recall, it was the Greywood elves, not the greatwood or Greyhawk elves. I have decent copies of some episodes of the original two seasons from their first (1980's) broadcast, including that one.

Thus, I don't believe that there ever were any DIRECTLY RELATED references to Greyhawk in the cartoons.

Do you happen to know if these DVD's have the original opening sequence (1980's sequence) or is it something different/new.

True, but I was thinking more like Venger. There was a 1st edition module called the Search for the Heartstone or something like that that had Kelek, and Strongheart, etc, and a few months ago Dungeon or Dragon magazine 3.5ed Warduke.

I think the module went along with the action figures of Strongheart and Warduke. (aka a tie-in marketing tool for the toy line)

Yes Huron I think you are right and I think that the cartoon put these characters in the story for the same reason.

It did indeed, but it was actually a pretty decent module all the same. I ran it for my players shortly after it came out (placing the Home of the Heartstone in the Gnarly Hills, IIRC)

It actually wasnt a bad module and the art was pretty neat, especially for the characters. Some of the names were corny though.

It's not something "new", that's for sure.

Up to now, all 14 episodes released so far have the same intro. Kids at a fair jump in a wagon, ride into the "D&D house", fall in a vortex, find themselves in the D&D world where Dungeonmaster give them each a magic item and the intro ends with Venger and Tiamat flying away, battling each other.

Not sure if it's the 1980 sequence though

The original two openings were great, especially the first one. I read somewhere that originally there were words to go along with the music. Is this correct?

(puts hands together just under chin, fingertips touching)

"Excellllent"

That sounds like the original first season intro, which is good. I'da hated it if somehow the FOX intro made it on to the DVD's.

I know the second season has a slightly different intro, but I never saw the third season episodes, so I can't comment on those.

Sounds good though, Thanks Mortepierre

As you can tell by my signature my favorite episode was the Day of the Dungeon Master for the below quote followed by the Dragons Grave Yard.
