#1void_spriteJun 29, 2004 1:53:53 | Not sure if this has been asked before (I did try searching and couldn't find anything), but are the demihuman pantheons of Greyhawk the same as FR? Glancing at the RPGA site, this seems to be the case, but I'm wondering if this was different before 3E. |
#2MortepierreJun 29, 2004 2:33:05 | The demihuman deities used in GH were, at first, those described in a series of article in Dragon Magazine (we're talking 1E here). Then, DMGR4 Monster Mythology (2E) was published and adopted as the standard in most AD&D worlds, including GH. At the same time, FR was publishing a series of gazetteers and deity-specific books that mentioned a few "newcomers" specific to FR (such as Deep Duera, Thard Harr, etc...). My guess is that when the LG gazetteer was published (and its list of deities enhanced for the LG website), they fell back on the updated stats for demihuman deities which had already been covered by FR (3E). Still, you'll notice that FR-specific deities aren't listed (and a good thing too!) |
#3zombiegleemaxJun 29, 2004 10:14:00 | Actually, the first run of demi-human and monster deities were published in the 1E Deities and Demigods which included racial deities like Moradin, Corellon, Gruumsh, Maglubiyiet, Garl Glitergold, Yondalla, etc... Pantheons for elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings and orcs as I recall were published in the 1E Unearthed Arcana and included most of the members of those pantheons that are still used today in settings like FR. There were exceptions. Drow deities like Lolth, Vhaeraun and Elistraee didn't appear until the 2E FR supplement Drow of the Underdark. I think the LGG didn't go into much detail about the demihuman deities to save space more than anything else. |
#4omoteJun 29, 2004 10:41:11 | It's not for 3E, but Monster Mythology is the best resource for demihuman dieties in the world of Greyhawk, hands down! I still use regularly. The NEW Dieties & Demi-Gods is good, but by mo means comprehensive... *sighs* >>Now there's another good article for Dungeon Magazine!<< DEMI HUMAN DIEITES IN GREYHAWK. Include a description much like the one in Monster Mythology and then update them 3# style. Nice. Along with those new "encounter charts" discussed in another thread. Erik you listening ;) .................................Omote FPQ |
#5zombiegleemaxJun 30, 2004 12:23:52 | I use the deities of the humanoids in Greyhawk even though they have really only been detailed in FR. |
#6qstorOct 06, 2004 12:18:39 | Yeah they were included in some 2e Greyhawk products. The Dragon articles by Rodge Moore IIRC were before Demi-Gods and Deities 1e. Mike |
#7zombiegleemaxOct 07, 2004 8:56:25 | Gary Gygax's list of gods in the WoG boxed set didn't include any demihuman pantheons. However, there were several gods, like Ehlonna and Ulaa, who were suitable for demihuman PCs to worship. IIRC, in one of his articles for Dragon Magazine, Gygax later gave his stamp of approval for using Roger E. Moore's demihuman pantheons in Greyhawk. (I think he mentioned that these gods would need some alteration, but we never got to see what he had in mind. Too late now!) The FtA era of Greyhawk fully integrated the demihuman pantheons and the excellent Monster Mythology book mentioned by other folks on this thread became the standard for all of these gods. I loved that book and my copy is now really battered because my RPG group used it so much. It also contains info on several monster gods that have been 'forgotten' by 3E and lots of adventure hooks, so it's well worth buying. IIRC, the appendix is amusing, too, with Carl Sargent disapproving of Ed Greenwood's overpowered dwarven deities! I'm pretty sure that the original idea behind the demihuman deities was that each world contained the same core pantheon, with some extra deities unique to each world and one or two known by different names, e.g. Muamman Duathal gets called something else in the FR books. In the end only Greyhawk and FR used these gods, though. Finally, for some unfathomable reason, WotC have created new dwarven and gnome pantheons for their Races of Stone book. I ignore these. |
#8scoti_garbidisOct 07, 2004 15:02:16 | Never caught that bit about the dwarves in the Appendix of Monster Mythology.... cool! Thanks for the reason to open that back up... I just got my copy about 4 months ago of half.com, in rather poor condition, and have been focusing on Panzuriel which I am using in an Underwater Adventure to hopefully be released on Canonfire late this year or early next and I am also focusing on Blipdoolpoolp for an adventure in my home game that should occur sometime early next year in my home game. What a great book. I have been using the LG list of Deities for my main list and then supplement it with info from Monster Mythology and info I find floating around the web. I am afraid it may not be canonical but I sure like it. Abathor is another I have thought about looking into but right now two is enough for me. |
