The Skorenoi are "Chaos-altered" and "Chaos-influenced" centaurs.

What does that mean exactly? Is there some kind of physical/mental/spiritual difference between them and normal centaurs?

It means that Chaos did some toying with them...the influence of chaos have changed these centaurs in some physical way (and also mentally). The Bestiary of Krynn uses these examples: "Unnaturally bulging muscles, deformed features or a blur of the animal and human-looking traits found in the creatures". Not only centaurs can be touched by Chaos and thus turn into the evil Skorenoi...the BoK mentions kyrie and the sample skorenoi in the book is a satyr...

If you haven´t already I suggest you read the novel Dezra´s Quest, which first introduced the Skorenoi...

This is not on topic but I have a question, why werent kodragons included in the Bestiary of Krynn or the Astral Dragon either?

They've been officially excised from canon. No more kodragons or astral dragons.

Yes, even after the trilogy of modules included them. The reasons include issues with the cosmology, as they are tied up with a history of dragonkind that is no longer correct, and because kodragons are very, very silly creatures that not even Andre' could save from the land of fuzzy silliness.

Or something like that. Basically, they don't fit any longer as they were presented. Pretend you never saw them! The kender made them up, or something.

Cheers,
Cam

That's a bit sad. As much as they were tiny furry dragons, I found the way the kodragon npcs in the modules were presented to be quite profound, with feelings, reasons etc.

They were twisted and perverted by a minion of Chaos. The transformation was physical, mental and spiritual.

An evil chaos spirit took over a tree and became what was known as Grimbough (spelling?). Over time, Grimbough converted a pretty good number of centaurs into Skorenoi, and even a few Satyrs, but IIRC, no other creatures were twisted by Grimbough (I could be mistaken though)

Enough critters were converted that they could continue to propagate as an offshoot race all their own, so their numbers haven't dwindled, and have become a bane to the 'true' centaurs.

Ok, so there are 3 different types of centaurs (normal, skorenoi and I heard of a 3rd type). How much of a stat difference is there between them, or are the other two (non-base) unplayable as PCs?

There's been some discussion of a centaur PC and trying to get a feel if there are real options in the Beastiary, a book I wouldn't normally buy since I don't DM and can't peak at (my local game shop doesn't get Soverign/Dragonlance books normally).

And shame on you people derailing my perfectly good centaur thread with your vile off-topic kodragon posts :D

Wendle centaurs (the third kind) are a smaller breed of centaurs living in the eastern regions of Ansalon. They are medium size. Statwise they get +4 str, +4 dex, +2 wis, -2 cha. They get +5 natural AC and level adjustment is +1

The skorenoi is a monster template so you´ll probably have to talk your DM about that one...

What about Abanisinian centaurs?

My bet would be that Abanasinian centaurs are the standard ones...it was Abanasinian centaurs who founded Duntollik (former skorenoi even).

OIC. What book does this happen in?

The BoK describes how the former skorenoi were rejected by their brethren and, feeling no kinship to the remaining skorenoi, they set out on their own and founded the new centaur nation...

Was that done in a novel or was it something just added to the Bestiary of Krynn?

It was excellent, in my opinion. Chris Pierson is a genious...although it's kinda hard to suspend disbelief for Caramon being 60ish and doing what he does in that book. But it certainly forshadows things a bit.

Oh nice, thanks so much. I assume with those stats it still has racial HD. A medium sized centaur, interesting.
