#1sgthulkaJul 26, 2004 9:28:58 | I saw that there was a re-make of the Isle of Dread in the latest Dungeon Magazine, and was a bit surprised to see that it was set in Greyhawk. I have the original module, and it's set in its own, specific campaign world. When did it get "moved" to Greyhawk? |
#2zombiegleemaxJul 26, 2004 9:53:59 | Erik had brought this up at a GreyChat some months back and it the idea seemed well received so apparently he just went ahead with it. I believe they communally decided on it's location as well. |

#4HalberkillJul 26, 2004 11:57:13 | Sheesh, Greyhawk has had enough of it's creative elements taken by other worlds, it's about time we get some too. Halber |
#5omoteJul 26, 2004 13:24:30 | Where exactly is the IoD located on Oerth now? (I havn't gotten my Dungeon yet) ................................Omote FPQ |
#6zombiegleemaxJul 26, 2004 13:35:07 | East of Hepmonaland, I believe? I vaguely recall that, but I could be wrong... |
#7mortellanJul 27, 2004 0:38:44 | I vaguely recall in Greytalk chat the IoD was being set in a chain near the Amedio jungle. |
#8zombiegleemaxJul 28, 2004 11:09:11 | It is in the bagged new Dungeon magazine? |
#9MortepierreJul 28, 2004 14:53:00 | Issue #114 |
#10omoteJul 29, 2004 9:31:32 | BTW, read the new Isle of Dread article in Dungeon #114. Not too bad, and it is definatly set in Greyhawk now, alothough if you take out all of the Greyhawk specific locations (which there isn't that many of them) it is essesentially still generic. But all in all it was pretty well done IMO. ...............................Omote FPQ |
#11zombiegleemaxJul 29, 2004 10:45:31 | I think that the Isle of Dread was a great module. Are there any new creatures in the new article? Is it out already on the stands or only via mail? |
#12zombiegleemaxJul 29, 2004 16:08:21 | I'm the offen.... err, author of the piece. By default, its set in Greyhawk (at the southwesternmost verges of the Densac Gulf, where it becomes the Pearl Sea). Its not an adventure, but a setting for adventures (you can use the original with a little work). But it should be very easy to use in the Known World, or other settings, including your own homebrew worlds. Alas, due to space constraints, only a portion of what we have done was included in the first part of the article (but get a load of that map!) There will be a follow up article for Dread (with monsters and adventure hooks) ....probably very soon. All the other extra material (that extrapolates alot of the GH connections) will get posted on Canonfire as an unofficial "web enhancement" for people who want to develop the Isle as a campaign setting. If anyone has questions, feel free to drop me a line. -Gary psmedger@canonfire.com |
#13max_writerJul 30, 2004 10:49:43 | Sweet, please let us know when Canonfire gets it. |
#14zombiegleemaxJul 30, 2004 11:31:12 | It is like having Jurassic Park in D&D! |
#15chatdemonAug 02, 2004 4:53:15 | Originally posted by Max_Writer Since Gary is the webmaster of Canonfire, we theoretically have it now. He's a slacker though :D so it may take a bit of prodding him to get the stuff posted. In otherwords, the more demand there is for it, the higher a priority it becomes for Gary, who's juggling writing for Dragon and running the site. |
#16chatdemonAug 02, 2004 4:56:15 | Also, for folks who enjoy Gary's article and want more ideas and inspiration for these types of adventures in Greyhawk's south seas, guys like myself, Iksander, Samwise and of course Gary himself have often mused on related topics at the weekly chat, and are usually well inclined to tossing the subject around a bit, so drop by some thursday and bring it up, the creativity is at a general high point when these kind of topics come up. |
#17chatdemonAug 02, 2004 4:58:47 | Originally posted by Amaron Blackthorn That brings up one concern I have about converting Isle of Dread to 3e. Dinosaurs are vastly more deadly now than they were in Basic D&D. I'm afraid an extended expedition on the island would quickly become a PC bloodbath. Anyone started running this adventure or anything similar using a lot of the dinosaurs from 3e? How have your PCs fared? |
#18MortepierreAug 02, 2004 7:29:48 | Originally posted by chatdemon You have a point. I ran module X1 not too long ago based on my own conversion of it (didn't know about Dungeon 114 at the time or I would have waited). It quickly became obvious that, beyond the simple problem of dinosaurs being much more lethal to 3.5E players, there was also the issue of a "stable" population of such diverse species having survived for so long on such "small" territory. So, after updating the natives (using the excellent Nyambe setting), I ruled that there were precious few dino left and most were on the verge of extinction. It allowed the players to explore the island without getting killed every two minutes and it made encounters with the last few dino that much more memorable. |
