#1baron_the_curseJul 30, 2004 18:32:26 | This is from the Author Profile: Douglas Niles.... Wizards: What projects are you working on at the moment? Douglas: I am working on a new Dragonlance series, the Empire Trilogy, set about ten years after the War of Souls. The first novel is Lord of the Rose, and it introduces a mysterious warrior -- a man who will play a pivotal role in the history of Solamnia. Ten years after the War of Souls?? Is he mistaken? Does he mean his writting a Trilogy on the rise of Solamnia? |
#2loreseekerJul 30, 2004 18:48:44 | In the Novel "Prisoner of Haven" you'll find following ad: Lord of the Rose Rise of Solamnia, Vol. 1 Douglas Niles In the wake of the War of Souls, the realms of Solamnia are wracked by strife and internecine warfare, and dire external threats lurk on its borders. A young lord, marked by courage and fateful flaws, emerges from the hinterlands. His vow: he will unite the fractious reaches of the ancient knighthood - or die in the attempt. November 2004 So, yes, he is writing a trilogy on the Rise of Solamnia |
#3baron_the_curseJul 30, 2004 18:52:17 | Alright, that sounds very cool. But still, ten years after the War of Souls! That seems a little to far into the future. I wouldn't like Dragonlance to do the major Time Jump it did with the release of Fifth Age. A decade is a long time to pass considering the latest novel is only set six months after the War of Souls. |
#4ferratusJul 30, 2004 19:26:46 | A 10 year jump sounds good to me, because I'm looking for any excuse so that we can get a new and revised Dragonlance Campaign Setting. I really don't like the old one. |
#5baron_the_curseJul 30, 2004 20:39:58 | Well, I'm not thrill with the current Dragonlance. So what do you consider old Dragonlance? War of the Lance? Fifth Age? The only thing I am enjoying now is that at least the Dragonlance products coming out are actual useful supplements, not endless and pointless adventures with pre-made characters like in 2nd Edition. |
#6ferratusJul 30, 2004 20:47:34 | Originally posted by Baron the Curse I mean the current Dragonlance Campaign Setting, which would be the old one, if we got a new one. I just don't consider it very well formatted, written, fleshed out, or conceived. I also think the rules should have been playtested so that we didn't get silly stuff like prestige classes that require previous prestige classes or rules like "Curse of the Magi".
I like the supplements well enough, but I don't like the Core book at all. |
#7zombiegleemaxJul 30, 2004 20:50:31 | 10 years or 1 month...it really doesn´t matter to me. The WoS trilogy left the Knights of Solamnia in chaos so I´m just looking forward to seeing how Doug sees the future Knighthood...what changes he´s going to make. Whether they will survive this current crisis they find themselves in (I have this strange feeling they´ll make it). As far as jumping a decade ahead I´m fine with that. Right now the minotaurs are invading Ansalon, the WoHS are trying to reestablish themselves and there are still a few dragon overlords to worry about. Anymore intrigue, war and dragon totems and my head´ll explode! 10 years down the road sounds just fine to me Ravenmantle |
#8loreseekerJul 31, 2004 6:29:56 | As of now, I'm looking forward to the trilogy - though, I'm also a bit anxious that it might not (fully) fit my vision of Dragonlance, like quite a few books did in the (older and (maybe especially the [*]) newer) past. A rise out of the ashes would be a nice twist - right now, all goes tumbling down. It seems, as if the plot "nation/order/... XY is (nearly) destroyed" is all the rage right now in DL - Thorbardin, Qualinesti, Silvanesti, The Tower & the Orders of High Sorcery .... You know what I mean? That gets a little bit old on me ... "Oh no, not again ..." [*] though that impression might be the result that I read the newer books just recently and I don't remeber the older ones so clearly. 10 years, well, I don't think that such a great gap. You know, they can't cover every month, every year of the History of DL. They really haven't Astinus & his Scribes writing for them If they had done so in the past, I wouldn't have been able to get & read all the novels ... nor would I have the space needed for all the bookshelves necessary to contain the history of thousands of years ... |
#9silvanthalasJul 31, 2004 9:04:44 | Originally posted by Loreseeker Currently, the novel is set for a release next March. The title of the trilogy seems to be just Solamnia Trilogy, but we'll know for sure in the next couple of months. |
#10zombiegleemaxJul 31, 2004 9:24:10 | I've received word that Doug's first novel does not actually start ten years after the War of Souls, but rather shortly after it. (I'm not sure on the exact time, but probably within a year or two.) The trilogy may cover a ten-year period of time before its conclusion, but we're not doing an abrupt "jump" in time. I'm looking forward to Doug's novel! Jamie Chambers Sovereign Press, Inc. |
#11zombiegleemaxJul 31, 2004 9:39:07 | Thanks for clearing that up Jamie I´m especially looking forward to a new "famous" knight. Apart from Linsha Majere the Knighthood has been far to "gray" for my tastes. There haven´t been many exciting charaters lately...Sir Gerard was rather "ordinary" in my opinion... Ravenmantle |
#12silvanthalasAug 01, 2004 11:11:16 | Originally posted by jechambers Yeah, Doug also told me the story takes place 10 years after WoS, but that could easily be refering to the bulk of the story, rather than the start. Although, looking back at the email Doug sent me, he does say "beginning about a decade after the War of Souls". Time will tell. |
