I could have sword I heard or read somewhere the the solamnics were fond of Gnomes and their inventions. and a quote of someting along the lines about how Gnomish devices work when you need them.

Solamnics do indeed have an appreciation of technology and, therefore, gnomes. I think that's mentioned in Chronicles somewhere.

Military planners do love the "boys back in the lab" and the wonderful toys they come up with, both in fantasy worlds and in the real one.

I'm sure that says something not so good about the world, but I'm not entirely certain what...

Well, it does help that Mt. Nevermind is on Sancrist, the same island as the bulk of the Solamnic knight strongholds.

Cheers,

Way back in my original 2e campaign I had a reluctant NPC knight that used all types of gnome inventions (think Don Quixote). The telescopic lance, helm mirrors, etc. He was a riot.

Actually sounds like Van Helsing.

Hmm... A Gnome tinker/undead hunter... interesting.

There was this old 2e d&d book called the Book of Inventions that I referenced for all my gnome inventions.

That book was priceless. I'll have to dig it up.

_Dragons of Winter Night_, Book 3, end of Chapter 4. It says that the people of Solamnia had a high respect for four things: the Code, the Measure, individual honor, and technology. By the point they met the gnomes, the latter had already developed the screw and the coiled spring.

Gnomes as _utterly_ incompetent doesn't really come into play until around _Legends_, although Roger Moore's original article on them in DRAGON (reprinted in _Leaves_) strongly suggests it.

Remember in DoSF that Kalathan's(spelling ???) port was protected by gnomish artillery that kept the KoT at bay until the dragons showed up and smelted them. That was a city controlled by the Solmanics. I believe that Palanthas' port has/had similar gnomish weaponry as well

In my campaign, in City's that are under the protection of the Knights of Solamnia, many of them have Gnome Engineer Guild outposts located in or about the city. It is there that Gnomes tinker with different war machines that are then used for warfare.

The Knights are understandably conservative about embracing some of the more "enthusiastic" Gnomish inventions. But the gnomes invented a lot of things that have proven useful (the screw, the gear and the pulley I believe).

So while the Knights aren't running a round in Gnomish powered-armor (although I am sure the gnomes have offered) they do rely on the gnomes for engineering support.
