can anyone point me to a discussion on why this ISN'T the official version of Castle Greyhawk by EGG?

I seem to recall that only a few parts of his notes were used.

Thanks

Greyhawk Ruins was written by Blake and Mobley whom created it by the stories and notes of Gygax (well) after his departure from TSR.

It's the official version IMC, and Troll Lord's Castle Zagyg (Yggsburg - Dark Chateau) will be placed elsewhere in the Flanaess, probably along the Wild Coast.

With a little work, Greyhawk Ruins has been one of my favorite 2nd Ed. Greyhawk products.

Truly the Greyhawk Ruins is the essence of the whole GH experience. The adventure is large, rather dark, very deadly, humorous, riddled with intrigue and sketchy enough fo the DM to add or subtract a lot. Detail is good, but the Dm's ideas have plenty of room to grow.
Personally, I find that if one 'traps' the PCs in there at some point, it adds even more to the mood of darkness and adventure.
IMHO it's the best big dungeon ever.

It may not be the Gygax Version, but just because he didnt write it doesnt make it any less Greyhawk or official

Technically there are two 'official' Castle Greyhawks. One a rather humerous (and oft riddiculed) version published as 'Castle Greyhawk', and the rather more acceppted 'Greyhawk Ruins'.

As to why it isnt the Gygax Castle Greyhawk- He had left TSR at that point, along with the Greyhawk IP.

Having read a selection of interviews with Gygax including comments on his 'original' Greyhawk (which is nothing like the Greyhawk World that he wrote for publication) I think the humerous 'Castle Greyhawk' sets the tone of a large proportion of the Gygaxian Castle Greyhawk.

I myself, use 'Greyhawk Ruins' for several reasons- Its actually been written and published, It fits in well with what I like about Greyhawk and has less of the quirky Gygaxian humour that myself and my players dislike.

It is the official version, because TSR released it, but it's not the EGG version, because EGG didn't write it.
None of his notes were used. Parts of the dungeons are based on the memories of players that did play in EGG's version, mainly Jim Ward, but overall, it's not really close to EGG's version.
I think the plots are kind of lame, but I use it. Mostly because I'm too lazy to draw so many maps. I heavily modify much of it, but there are parts that I really like as is, and that have become major locations/events in my campaign; areas that have so far managed to repeatedly put the smack down on my players, but that they are determined to solve/defeat/etc.

It's an okay GH adventure, but it's not a Gygax GH adventure.

I expect Castle Zagyg to be a much better take on the same premise.

For a rather fun integration of WG7 Castle Greyhawk with WGR1 Greyhawk Ruins check out Russel Bird`s great Summer Fiction Teaser 1 & 2 and subsequent 46-part Return to Greyhawk Ruins fiction on the Greytalk Archive.

Well, it`s only fan fiction. And a rather excellent one, too.
They don`t have to buy or play it. But you`re right I should have left it out, as it is a fun surprise in the fiction too, IIRC ! Give it a try!

With stuff from Gygax like EX1, EX2, and that spaceship and NPCs named Telldrol Storis (Quiz: where`s he from?) I almost don`t really understand why people do so much bash WG7, anyways. Almost.

I think it was simply the flying flapjacks, for me.
