Hmm, some questions that have arisen

The party I was DMing recently met disaster through their own stupidity (They thought they could take on a Dragon Overlord when they were 14th level...they were all destroyed to put it lightly).

So, we start a new campaign and they all want to do strange things. We have an Irda, and someone who wanted to be an Ogre (I convinced them that being a Half-Ogre was better for the group at least), and two Squires of Neraka, as well as a Cleric. It seems they all want to be evil.

However, those aren't the questions. The first question is dealing with one Squire of Neraka who is starting out as a Lawful Evil Ranger. He wants to make a favored enemy of the Knights of Solamnia. My take is that Knights of Solamnia isn't a race. His counterploy is that he could just choose humans instead, but wants to specifically target Knights of Solamnia. I'm inclined not to allow this...as it's not per se a racial enemy. However, perhaps I am wrong in this...any one have any say on this?

The next comes to my perusing of the Dragonlance Campaign and wanting to use quest experience. (pg 193-194 Table 6-3)Now they've come close to completing a major quest, but not quite, however, at the end of the last campaign, I was rather disturbed. They were 14th level going on 15th level, and it states to give them 1/2 of their total experience. That would shoot them up to close to 20th level if multiple levels were allowed, HOWEVER, seeing that one can only go up one level per playing session...what's the point? Why grant them that much experience? Or is it being misread and only means 1/2 of the experience to the next level?

Strange, and they all wanted to be knights of Solamnia last adventure...

On page 52 of the DLCS, it says "Rangers may select an organization instead of a creature type as a favored enemy...Evil Rangers might oppose the Knights of Solamnia..."

Miles.

Ah, the player has me there! I guess he'll get his wish!

Now I just have to wait for the next question to be answered. Thanks for the quick reply, more especially because it paints it in black and white.

pg. 193

Say use common sense to make sure the character are getting the approppriate experience when awarding mission goals. So you can divide it by 2, 4, 6, 8 or whatever you feel is appropriate.

Yes I've had a few parties die do some disturbingly stupid things. The latest was the new guy (this was his first and only session) somehow took over the group, and then decided that fighting they could blackmail a lich into letting them go alive. They were all of 5-6th lvl going against a 18th lvl lich that they should've avoided or could have at least bargained with, not try to blackmail.

Anyway...as to the XP for completeing a quest. I've always awarded 1/4-1/8 XP needed to go from base XP to next level XP. Then you add the Roleplaying XP's, which should vary from player to player (I personally award RP XP at the end of each session usually no more than excess of 300 XPs). I know what the DLCS says but I did the math and I found it quite disturbing that XP was basically being given away at especially high levels.

What time period are you playing in? Also wouldnt the Irda have problems being evil? They are afraid of becoming ogres arent they?

Not especially. It's the period almost right before the DoSF and the breaking of the GrayGem. (So I suppose more realistically they are squires of Takhisis). I sent them all searching for an ancient Ogre (more like Irda...but to the Ogre's it would be an Ogre as they remember) talisman each for their own ends. The Irda interestingly enough thus far is Lawful Neutral, but his actions if they continue probably WILL lead him to darkness, as he's not really suppressing the evil within. His character is interested in necromancy of all things...and hopes to prove his worth and his studies worth to the Irda by finding the magical item.

I of course expect he'll fail in that...but players can be innovative. The Half-Ogre hopes to prove his worth to the other Ogres (which he'll fail to do even if he finds the item unless some really odd dice rolls pop up). And of course the squires are off to find the item because they've been ordered to do so. How this will all turn out is unpredictable at best, chaotic and insane at worst.
