#2zombiegleemaxAug 19, 2004 18:21:09 | The Epic Level Handbook lists his full stats in 3.0 rules but I don't have the book myself so I don't know anymore. |
#3cwslyclghAug 19, 2004 18:32:21 | his most recent stats list him as a 27th level wizard (ELH page 308-309) |
#4MonteblancoAug 19, 2004 21:17:43 | Mordenkainen was stated in several books (Rogues Galery, Mordenkainen Fantastic Adventure, City of Greyhawk, Greyhawk Adventures, Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, Living Greyhawk Journal #0, and Epic Level Handbook) in a not very consistent way. Quite frankly, although I used him once, his abilities were never a point. The players just have to known that he was powerful enough to justify his fame. |
#5zombiegleemaxAug 20, 2004 0:00:30 | He's 5th-level, with Illusions of Granduer. |
#6pauln6Aug 20, 2004 7:47:56 | In 1st ed, he was level 20 in 581 CY I think (as was Tenser). In Epic levels book, Mordy was listed as level 27 I think. Tenser was listed as level 21 in 586 CY, and that was after been dead for a while. I think it's a question of personal choice. Wizards are rare in my campaign so I pitched him at level 24 as at 586 CY, which was just slightly less powerful than Philidor (level 25 in 585 CY) I need to get a life.... |
#7lincoln_hillsAug 20, 2004 18:13:42 | If you're not a member of the Epic Level Handbook cadre, my advice is to provide a Wiz20 with several extras. According to 'Folk, Feuds and Factions' from the Greyhawk City boxed set (fairly old, pre-Wars stuff), Mordenkainen has a large, well-hidden and magically defended citadel high in the Yatils: a clone in stasis (probably stashed far, far from that citadel): the allegiance of a couple of teens-level fighters, Eraj and Felnorith: a cadre of griffon-mounted soldiers/bodyguards: an ancient cloud dragon (not as a full-time partner, but a regular ally): possession of at least one minor artifact (the Silver Key of Portals) and probably others: a stockpile of spellbooks including "all spells other than those specific to wizards other than Mordenkainen himself": and, of course, the ability to call on the Circle of Eight in a REAL crisis. All this in addition to the usual perks of a 20th-level wizard. Remember that he's a former 1st edition PC - which means he's ingenious, ready for combat 24 hours a day, and has less compassion than a Klingon tattoo artist. (DANGER: Inappropriate genre metaphor detected! ABORT!) |
