#1zombiegleemaxAug 20, 2004 3:36:52 | I read from a website that there is a space beholder from Lorebook of the Void. What is the difference between a space beholder and a normal beholder? Is the space beholder simply a normal beholder that can spelljam? Any other differences? Thanks. |

He's a beholder bartender on the Rock of Bral, rejected from his kind because one of his eyes has been changed (to detect lie or something similiar, IIRC). His history is interesting: He hails from Realmspace, where he was the first (and thus far only) beholder to ascend to the top of the "spire" of H'Catha, a feat that granted him knowledge of "everything". This makes him an excellent fountain of information for PCs, pushing them off into the right directions. The limits of his knowledge are unknown, but he likely knows that the entire universe is merely a game played by a bunch of drunken guys in their basement... ACK! Should have read the post more closely. My bad! Anyways, in reading the link, I'd say no, there's no difference between a space beholder & a regular beholder. Lorebook of the Void reprints the entry for beholder along with introducing two new types: Orbus (which are stunted, mutant beholders with no eye-powers and are used as living spelljamming engines) and hive mothers, which organize "hives" of beholders. There is no monster that is specifically a "space beholder". Sorry about that, got confused in my caffine-deprived state ;) |
#3zombiegleemaxAug 20, 2004 15:31:39 | Thanks. Also I read from SJ website that there is a beholder-kin called Orbmax. Which SJ book does it come from? Or is it supposed to be an unofficial monster? P/S: Anyway, I did a conversion of it here... |

#6voldenuitSep 07, 2004 6:50:02 | The 2nd Ed Monstrous Arcana Supplement I, Tyrant lists the various classes of Beholders and Beholderkin as follows: True Beholders Beholder Beholder Mage Hive Mother Beholder Priestess Elder Orb Beholder-kin Death Kiss Eye of the Deep Gauth Observer Spectator Abominations (special-purpose creatures created by Hive Mothers) Director Examiner Lensman Overseer Watcher Undead Beholders Death Tyrant Doomsphere Kasharin Rumoured Variations Astereater Evil Eye Gorbel Orbus In addition, the 3e supplement Monsters of Faerun had 2 beholder subspecies not listed above: Eyeball Gouger Phew! Anyway, I, Tyrant mentions that there are spelljamming beholders, and that they once built a spelljamming vessel that was the size of a small moon. It resembled a beholder in appearance and could destroy whole planets (Death Star, anyone?). Cheers, V. |

#8TiberienSep 30, 2004 13:23:56 | The Spelljammer War Captains Companion boxed set included a section on Beholder hive/fleet organization as well as stats for Tyrant and Tyrant scout ships and also had ship stat cards for all of the common space faring races. The Tyrants had a "main gun" which concentrated the powers of the eyes and the Tyrant Scouts had a small turret powered by 2 beholders that shot beams of roughly magic missle power. The beholder-kin is also in the Monstrous Compendium SpellJammer appendix. |
