The Thinker Gnomes in the 5th Age were first described in the SAGA material, and their origin was that Reorx had lifted his "curse" on them just before he departed with the other gods.

With the new revelations/retcons brought about by WoS, this origin can't really hold true anymore.

What is the current canon origin for thinker gnomes on Ansalon? Chaos? Or were they always there?

I'm going to say they were always there. I could be wrong on that.

The idea, really, behind "thinker" gnomes goes back to at least Dragonlance Adventures. Mad gnomes, as they were originally known, were presented as gnomes that came from other worlds who made things that worked when they tinkered. DLA was set up in a way that you could import characters from other settings.

The next phase of this evolution would be with Taladas. The tinker/thinker distinction really finds its roots there with the minoi and gnomoi. The interesting thing is that the thinkers were more prominent.

The SAGA gaming materials really brought thinker gnomes into the limelight. Here's where the Curse of Reorx was introduced.

Then with the DLCS, the association between mad gnomes and thinker gnomes is made. I'm sure that some people will say this is a retcon. I prefer to think that they were getting back to the basics of the setting, going back to the mad gnomes.

So that's the basic evolution of thinker gnomes.

I prefer to look at it in one of two ways- 1st, evolution. There were gnomoi in the group that came over with all the minoi tribes, and it could well be that Reorx encouraged them to breed true, to try to combat the forces of chaos, and they started showing up in the early fifth age. Second, Reorx, apologetic for his actions with regard to the father of all, gave gifts to his children, allowing the chaos touched children to access magic despite their resistances, and restoring his chosen children to their original stature.

That, or migration =)

either way, i love gnomoi =)

I've always liked thinker gnomes/gnomoi too.

As a side note, many of the new races and events in the 5th age of ansalon seem to closely mirror Taladas, don't they?

thinker gnomes/gnomoi, afflicted kender/marak kender, minotaurs with an empire/league of minotaurs

my first ever online post to a dragonlance forum, back on the old DL mailing list, was on that exact subject, comparing how the thinkers and afflicted were exactly taladas clones.

and since i'm an insane taladas freak.... =)
