I saw a thread over on the Mystara board about the wonders of the world in Mystara, so I figured it'd make a good topic for Greyhawk. What do you guys think the wonders of the Oerth are?

I'd nominate:

1) The Road of Skulls
2) The Dirawein
3) City of the Gods (maybe)
4) Obsidian Citadel (not really but I'm out of ideas)

Let's hear your thoughts!

1. Rift Canyon
2. The City of Glass
3. The Timeless Tree & Oakvein
4. Slerotin's Tunnel
5. Oerth Blood
6. The Bonewood
7. Mother Mord's Oeridean Clam Chowder

Tharizdun and Phillodor are "wondrous," but too wondrous for my tastes.

By wonders do you mean man-made? Like the 8 wonders of the ancient world?

I'd add the Silent Tower in Keoland, hmm can't think of any others right off.

Good ones. How could I forget Tovag. Remind me is the Cauldron an actual cauldron or was it something else? The Sea of Dust is definitely man-made but not unique, how many areas of Oerik are unnaturally made? Sea of Dust, the Wastes, Bright Desert, Dry Steppes...is there ANY naturally occuring deserts in Oerik?

I would say that the area around Rift Canyon in the Bandit Kingdoms is natural and it seems to have some desert qualities. But maybe i just put my foot in my mouth and don't know enough about Rift Canyon.

Also, If anybody knows where source material about these wonders can be found. I would love it. I know about a few of them but some other are new to me.

My understanding is that the Cauldron of Night is a natural geological bowl, or depression in one of the eastern mountain ranges.

I don't know where Oerth's natural deserts are. I imagine they're out there somehwere. I'm sure one of the Greyhawk sages will enlighten us.

Castle Greyhawk
Doomgrinder, well less so after the adventure
Erei Cinlu (sp?)
lost city of the Suel in the Suss
Tenser's Oerthblood tower
Dorakaa seems quite fantastic
City of Summer Stars
the Hexpools

I wouldn't say Erelhei-Cinlu is a wonder. It's a city just as any other, except it's beneath the Crystalmist Mountains.

From one of the posts over on the Mystara Wonders thread, there was a proposal to group the wonders in four categories similarly thus:

  • The Ancient Wonders of the Flanaess
  • The Modern Wonders of the Flanaess
  • The Lost Wonders of the Flanaess
  • The Natural Wonders of the Flanaess

Because Mystara has Immortals that have had a quite direct effect on the planet, some were proposing wonders of Immortal make, Mystara's Hollow World would have qualified, for instance. Dunno how that would fly in the Flanaess though.

I think the four you suggested are good catergories. The Immortal wonders probably won't apply to Greyhawk, not much divine building going on.

I'm a lil tipsy from the beer right now, but perhaps we can cement this into another CF listing ;)

Think people would use it?

I think they would, hell, might even make a good idea for a "Which is the Most Wondrous Wonder?" poll.

Actually according to "Ivid the Undying" the Cauldron of Night is located on Asperdi Isle of the Sea Barons but it is a carefully guarded secret so you didn't hear it from me

Almost forgot the Desert Question : Any natural deserts...

The desert area around the Rift Canyon is natural
The Dry Steppes became most desertlike after the Twin Cataclism but was there no desert area before...unknown
The Northern Barren Wastes are created by a nature portal to the elemental plane of fire
The Sea od Dust and the Bright Desert were created by the Twin Cataclism and the Fall of the Kingdom of Sulm respectfully.

The Sea of Dust and the Bright Desert were created by the Twin Cataclism and the Fall of the Kingdom of Sulm respectfully.

Good summaries, yet not all are naturally occuring deserts. Epic spells, cursed relics and even portals to the metaphysical inner planes created these deserts directly or indirectly. According to WGR5 the Wastes were probably created in a similar manner to the Sea of Dust yet before the Twin Cataclysms happened. I would pose that the elemental tie just keeps the Wastes in a state of desertification. Also some would say, not sure if there is any hard published evidence here, that Riftcanyon was made by magic as well and thus the area around it was probably fertile before hand, but IMO that is probably the only natural desert in east oerik, and a small one at that. It's interesting how in GH and FR alike that most deserts are merely once fertile nations levelled by magic.

Anyone want to speculate on what other areas of the published Oerth world map may contain deserts?

While Erelhei-Cinlu is probably not a wonder (unless the title of "foulest hive of scum and villainy" makes it a contender), the Vault wherein it lies is almost certainly on any list of "natural" Wonders.

And the term 'natural' is misleading in a world created by gods, right? I mean, does the Wonder have to have been caused by natural processes after the creation, or will anything that occurred during the creation qualify?

At any rate - I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Land of Black Ice, the Pinnacles of Azor'alq (again - natural or created?) and the Nyr Dyv. (Which is quite possibly the most convenient, though hardly the safest, dumping-ground for unwanted artifacts and so forth. Nothing like abyssal-trench depths in an inland lake for keeping people from nosing around...)

I admit an affinity for the "Mysterious Places" in the games I have run online. "Into the Land of Black Ice" dealt not only with that region and Rigodruok (The Rainbow Vale) but also Tovag Baragu. "Beneath the Pinnacles of Azor'alq" (my current PbP) is set in the Dramidj Ocean and again incorporates Tovag Baragu (per the description in GA). I am working on notes for an undersea mega-adventure incorporating Turucambi, The Sinking Isle, and the Jungle of Lost Ships. I also have notes for a chat-based game set in the Suss, which deals with the lost city in that region.

Aeolius, care to share a summary of your Suss Forest campaign notes here? Was this the campaign that featured awakened animals as player characters?

Nature of the Beast That would be the one, though I have yet to actually run the campaign. Granted, the 3e MM3 completely destroyed the susurrus, so I'd have to retrofit an old one.

I've been wanting to play an awakened wolf and steal some of the history from Wolf's Rain.
