Anyone that has the Key of Destiny module knows that one of the encounters within involves the players meeting up with a pair of giant eagles that ask the players to retrieve their eggs for them.

When I tried to spring this enocunter on my group, through an NPC, the players were like--------->

Maybe it is just my group or does the whole giant eagle thing kind of clash with the serious edge that the campaign has ?

Have they read The Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings? Giant eagles in D&D come directly from that source, and have been closely tied to elves in much the same way as griffons have. I can't see their inclusion in the adventure as being at all humorous.

For that, we have Shade, the kender nightstalker.

Cheers,

The whole giant eagle thing did not fit well with my group; I even felt that it was kind of corny in LoTR.

Well...if you don't buy into it, your PCs certainly won't.

I'm not saying they wouldn't have thought it was corny if you didn't...but they're certainly not going to take it seriously if you didn't either.

Yep, that is probably it. I was no more interested in the encounter than they were.

Yeah...that never helps.

But...corny or not...that encounter leads to the baaz draconians...which is always fun. :D

I ran that encounter and it was pretty straight laced. The only humorous part of the encounter was that the eagle kept looking at the dwarf in the party "c0ck eyed" and commenting on how revolting he was.

The dwarf was min/maxed to have a 6 Chr so I've been making him pay for it anytime the party encounters a sentient being with remarks on his appearance. Its a running gag for the most part.

LoL, That is good role playing. What is funny is my players always note that a negative Charisma could mean your hideous or(Notice the "or" ) you just have a horrible attitude. I find it strange that everyone picks the horrible attitude.

I actually caught one out there though; he played a fire genasi(From the FRCS) in RavenLoft. But that is not the worst part, he opted to have red eyes, and the hair that looked like dancing flames. Everyone knows that people in RL are extremely superstitious(And for good reason) and yet he picks a creature that practically resembles a devil. I had a ball with him that session.

My group liked that encounter quite a bit. Mind you, they are two lawful good and one chaotic good character (Monk of Majere, Cleric of Kiri-Jolith and elven white robes wizard). I have an NPC Noble Draconion (Lightning, Paladin of Kiri-Jolith) traveling with them and he has a particular hatred for evil dragonkind. Once they subdued the Baaz and recovered the eggs he slew them (coup de grace). My PC's thought that was pretty cool as he is a very hard core character. The Giant Eagels would have had a problem with him except they saw what he did to the Baaz and approved. heh.

My PCs encountered the Baaz first. After waiting around to get his sword back out of the Baaz, the elven ranger of the party scaled the bluff the Baaz launched their attack from and tracked them back to their cave to see if there were any more. What they found was the eggs. Odd, but they decided to take them with, they don't know what the eggs are from and debate smashing them, eating them, or maybe hatching them to see what they are. They decide to wait and have them IDed first at least, pack them with a couple cloaks in a backpack to keep them warm and set off.

A couple of random encounters later the Giant Eagles swoop down to ask the party if they've seen the Baaz they're looking for. It immediatly dawns on them and they tell the Eagles that they killed the Baaz and found "These eggs" which of course makes the parents very happy indeed.

All in all a good encounter... I'm just waiting for the PCs to remember they have the magic feathers.
