Heroes of the Heart

Okay...question here. If one wanted to do 3e rules on the Heroes of the Heart as they were at the beginning of the Dragons of a New Age adventure, and they wanted to keep them in line with the official stats given for some of them in the Age of Mortals book...how would one go about doing that?

How important is it that they are all the same level? Most of the HotH range between 4th and 7th level (Shaon and Raph being the lowest, Dhamon being the highest). The HotL used to have variation as well...but now they have all been upgraded to all be 6th level.

If the HotH are all upgraded to be the same level (5th or 6th is a good starting point, I think) would it really screw things up if Dhamon were 8th or 9th level? Unfortunately, (because you have to have a +5 BAB to become a Lily Knight) Dhamon has 5 levels of Fighter and 3 levels of Knight of the Lily...so at the very least he has to be an 8th level character at the start of DoaNA...and I think it would be even better if he had at least 1 level of Rogue Knight...which would put him at 9th level.

So...if you have 10 or so characters that are 6th level and one 9th level character...that's within the "3 level limit" mentioned in the DMG...how much would this screw with things do you think?

Basically...what suggestiong would you all have?

I'm not a big fan of variation. If they're supposed to be used as pregens for a DoaNA campaign, i.e. the one that is featured throughout the SAGA boxed sets, they should all begin at the same level.

Given the level of challenges and opponents they face throughout that series, you wouldn't be out of line to have them all start out at 8th level. You may have to fudge things a bit, but it just isn't smart to offer up varying levels of character in that situation. It's why the Heroes of the Lance in the War of the Lance book are all 6th level and post-Xak Tsaroth.

8th, really?

Hmm...it seems a bit high...but maybe that'd be right.

Yeah...I like that they're all the same, too (given the 3e rules). 8 just seems kinda high...I mean, is it really any fun to start out a game at level 8? (although I don't know how to make Dhamon any lower and still match with the official rules).

Which does beg the question...why does the Knight of the Lily require a +5 BAB and the Knight of the Crown only require a +3, anyway? Just curious (it wasn't even anything I noticed until last night).

Sure. You can start a campaign with some success at any level, really. Obviously, starting below 10th level would be easier than after, but these are pregenerated characters. It's a long-standing tradition with pregens that they start at something other than 1st.

I presume it's so you can be a cleric 4/crown 1 or mystic 4/crown 1 as well as a fighter 4/crown 1 or ranger 4/crown 1. Cleric of Kiri-Jolith (with War domain) or mystic (with War domain) are the fastest ways to sword knight, after all. There was a concerted effort in the DLCS design, apparently, to make the Crown knight and wizard of High Sorcery reachable after 4 levels rather than 5, which is a break from the standard prestige class guidelines.
