What is it? Where are its known landings? How did it come to be? Who can be encountered upon it?

The infinite staircase connects to every plane.

It starts in Selune's realm of the Gates of the Moon.

I remember lots of lillends can be encountered on the staircase but you can probably encounter just about any monster as planar travelers are all over the thing.

Also if I remember correctly, some people/creatures have decided to camp out on some of the landings so you could call them residents.

Tales of the Infinite Staircase from Planescape can answer all of these questions. Also Duty & Deity from FR also ties in with that module.

Both should be on rpgnow.com for 5 bucks.....

Oh, also, if you go to the WOTC main webpage and click on the Downloads link and then click on the link for Old Edition Downloads, there are a bunch of old modules and supplements you can download for free as PDF's.

Download the one named For Duty and Deity and it has a lot of info on the Infinite Staircase, where it goes, and some plot hooks for it.

Here is a link to the downloads section on the WOTC main site:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

The best module that describes the Infinite Staircase is called Tales from the Infinite Staircase, but that is not available as a free download unfortunately, but you can find them in used bookstores. In fact they have some here in Austin at Half-Price Books.

I believe it may be available for purchase as a PDF download for less than $5 either on the SVGames website or the RPGNow website.

The Infinite Staircase manifests in the Gates of the Moon once a month, when the moon is full and fog creeps up from the water. On other times, it still exists, but it's nearly impossible to get to.

The Stair connects to all cities that exist, all cities that ever were or would be or could be. It's a manifestation of the creative spirit, drawn to the imaginations of those who dwell in any of the planes of possibility. That's why it's mostly found in cities - it generally takes a large population to attract one of the Staircase's landings.

The only way to find a door is to want to find it, and all of the group has to agree on where they want to go. If you travel the Staircase, go with a group. If you go alone, you risk finding the city of your deepest heart's desire, and then how could you bear to leave? You can only travel the Staircase alone once.

You can meet just about anything while you're there. Anything that can reasonably walk or be carried up and down a really long flight of stairs, that is. The guardians of the Stair are the lillends, and they hold mysteries, riddles and puzzles which are the keys to its doors. The Mimir has a suggested (2e) encounter list: http://mimir.net/monsters/pathways.shtml

The stairs themselves are built out of every material, and they branch in every direction like an Escher print. Gravity is objective, but in no consistent direction.

The Mimir has probably the best articles on it: http://mimir.net/pathways/staircase.shtml

The Gates of the Moon is a realm in the first layer of Ysgard where the moon gods Selune (of Faerun) and Soma (of India) live, along with possibly others. It would be appropriate to put any and all chaotic good moon gods there.

The Forgotten Realms cosmology also has the Gates of the Moon in it. I think Finder and Shaundakul are also said to live there.

Keen. Thanks!

Gray Richardson - heh, makes me a bit nostalgic - I grew up in Austin; my stepfather built Jazz on 6th street and the Old Alligator Grill on Santa Monica. Go down to Dan's Hamburgers and have one for me, would you?
