#1zombiegleemaxNov 14, 2004 10:30:45 | I've got Farcluun playing a larger role than black flame has, and i was thinking. His name kind of has the elven naming convention (the two vowels one after the other) and I decided that he should be elven or half-elven (more likely the latter as half-elves were the only ones who could be dragons besides humans in 2e). I've been working on converting him to 3.5 (along with Kalak). Considering he's a 22nd level dragon and Abalache-Re was a 21st level dragon during black flames, yet it sounded like she was equal to him if not stronger in power, I went with the idea that while Farcluun is a further advanced dragon, Abalache-Re has more levels overall. For some background to describe why the two seem to be so bitter, I decided that Farcluun originally served as a defiler under Abalache-Re until he stole some scrolls and notes that allowed him to begin the dragon transformation and then ran off with some other stuff of hers, eventually offing the village of halflings to advance his transformation. In Black Flames, rather than having him hunt for some crummy black flames spell, I have him looting Sielba's laboratories looking for more information on the dragon process specifically and the posibility of atracting his own living vortex (I also changed the scope of the time spells he used, having them actually reverse time completely within the area of effect so when they enter the palace they find the recent corpses of the conflict, including Sielba herself eventually). Obviously the party won't be killing Farcluun as that's impossible (buncha weaklings), so I have both him and Abalache-Re appearing to die in the ensuing destruction of the palace. They leave, thinking that Raam is now sans a Sorcerer-Queen and word gets back there. The city erupts into chaos (a la when she actually does die in prism pentad times) with factions making power grabs. Eventually Abalache-Re returns to her rioting city to try and restore order. But so does Farcluun, who takes over one of the other factions, and civil war breaks out, each side with its own dragon. The next part will be forest maker, where Abalache-Re will likely succeed in the ceremony and return to Raam super powerful, which will lead to a cruel crackdown and the decimation of Farcluun's faction, who will flee the city only to pop up again elsewhere. So whatcha all think? Anyone else use Farcluun fo more than just a feel-good sacrificial lamb for the party? Any thoughts on my ideas? nic |

But, apparently contrarily to you, I entend to have him appear in Faces of Athas and win the spot as the official conversion to be used with Black Flames, so I can't change anything from what is written in the adventure besides what normally changes from 2E to 3E. I too have it he's smarter than he appeared in the adventure and that he doesn't really die at the end, but had to find plausible explanations that worked within the framework of the written adventure. When you're finished with him do send me a copy through my email, I'd like to see what you've done with him. The work on my side is never finished. |

Farcluun does look a little less than ambitious in the adventure, though... for a dragon. So yeah Cap, your changes seem to be fitting. Good ideas! PB |
#4pringlesNov 15, 2004 13:27:04 | Let me guest. You brought Black Flame at Le Valet de Coeur on St-Denis street where there other old rpg book. There were a Dark Sun box 1 edition and Black flame. Lol, I nearly brought it one week ago but i tough Black flame suck and i took Freedom instead. |
#5the_peacebringerNov 15, 2004 13:54:02 | You guessed right, Pring! But "suck or no suck", I'm out to get any of the old DS material... in the original format, not just PDF. Besides, the adventure has a few interesting aspects, like tid-bits of information on Yaramuke and Sielba... and for $6, it's wallet-friendly. |
#6jon_oracle_of_athasNov 20, 2004 12:30:20 | In Black Flames, rather than having him hunt for some crummy black flames spell, I have him looting Sielba's laboratories looking for more information on the dragon process specifically and the posibility of atracting his own living vortex (I also changed the scope of the time spells he used, having them actually reverse time completely within the area of effect so when they enter the palace they find the recent corpses of the conflict, including Sielba herself eventually). Technically speaking, it's the black waters scroll he seeks. Though I also like the idea of Farcluun's greater goals. The time travelling scheme sounds interesting, but could do weird things to a campaign, say if Hamanu returns to make sure Sielba is actually dead and wipes the party out. Would be fun to DM though. *evil laugh* |
