Nov 18, 2004 3:49:53 I've just seen english version of The Grudge. Very effective ghosts!! I was wondering, how would you translate it into D&D? Oh course you could make it a commoner with the ghost template, but anyone got other ideas?

Nov 19, 2004 19:37:59 I have been trying to place the Ju-on into Ravenloft terms for a little while, but it would certainly have commoner levels. Here's some of what I came up with.

Mother - com4, Rank 3 Ghost.
Toshio - Com1 Rank 2 Ghost.
Cat - Rank 1 Ghost.
Father - Com 5, Rank 4 Ghost (he is the Ju-on after all)

Abilities/Salient Abilities:
Mother - Manifest, Frightful Moan, Commanding Appearance, Ebon Shroud, Rejuvenation, Turn Resistance +4, Horrific Apearance
Toshio - Frightful Moan, Manifest, Mind Games, Rejuvenation, Turn Resistance +4, Drain Soul (see below)
Cat - Manifest, Frightful Moan, Aura of Despair, Rejuvenation, Turn Resistance +2
Father - Manifest, Commanding Appearance, Swallow Whole, Ebon Shroud, Command Undead, Rejuvenation, Turn Resistance +10, Malevolence, Horrific Appearance.

The father would be the essential component, the other spirits are slaves to his will(*this is automatic and does not allow a saving throw).

The mother and Toshio are used to lure in, capture victims while the father feeds on them. The victims also become Geists under the father's control once they are devoured.

Drain Soul (Su): Toshio may stand within 5 ft. of a living creature and begin to drain the very lifeforce from that person, feeding it off to the father. The ability acts as a ray that automatically strikes the target and forces a Will save each round, failure results in the loss of 1d4 constitution. If constitution reaches 0, the victim is dead and the father had devoured that person's soul and will rise as a geist under the father's control in 24 hours.

That is some of the stuff I came up with for my planned article, wit heverything else I am currently doing it might be a while before I get it done. I am also planning other things from eastern horror, including a Ravenloft equivalent of Sadako for Rokushima Taiyoo.

The only addition or change I would make would be to give the mother (Kayako) some kind of energy drain ability; she seems to drain the life out of Doug (Karen's boyfriend) at the end of the movie. Otherwise, these are really excellent. I feel The Grudge is an excellent premise for a possible Ravenloft domain - a very small one, within a house.
Great stats though!

Nov 22, 2004 17:54:32 My ideas are based on Ju-on, not the remake, which I have yet to see. However, Doug's character has no equivalent in the original, so I couldn't work in an energy drain ability. Rika (replaced by SMG's character in The Grudge) is single as far as we know in the original movie.

Also, if you go to the General forum on the Fraternity of Shadows message boards, you will see my ideas for the Headless Horseman for 3.5 in the Sleepy Hollow thread. My ideas for it would never be canon, but it might be interesting ;)
