There's a thread going in the D&D Miniatures forum about what heroes or villains from your favorite setting would you like to see released in an upcoming D&D Miniatures set.

I put in my vote for some Mystara personalities and creatures.
Here's the link.

So, I was wondering if anyone might want to share their opinions on my list, add their own wish list, or discuss whether or not we use the pre-painted plastic D&D Miniatures in our games (I use them).

I use them as well. I just don't have the patience to paint my own . Price is good too.

OTOH, there are minis that just don't go with Mystara (at least, my version of Mystara) and my style of game. My group is not one that will base a character around a particular mini either, and I do have minis that will not be used IMC. Some that come to mind are the bladling fighter, chitine, and githyanki. Otherwise, we just use whatever comes close to what we want; for example, in our game last saturday, I used a red dragon for a chimera, and I've used the tanerukk as/with orcs. We're not overly hung-up on having an exact representation and use them to made combat a little easier and interesting.

Used to paint miniatures many years ago - a wonderful hobby. Almost meditative in its tranquility. But we hardly ever used them in the game because it became too expensive to buy 50 different types of monster miniatures. But just as I always get ideas for NPCs looking at a fantasy picture, I also get useful ideas from seeing a cool miniature. The character comes to life in my head, so to speak.

In our game we use "tactical maps" which are basically crude maps of the immediate area where a combat is taking place. At the beginning of each round before we play out initiatives I, the DM, sum up where everyone moved in the previous round, who's flanking who etc. and note it down with a pencil, helping everyone visualize it much better. It also prevents mistakes in combat based in misperceptions / misunderstandings.

Thanks for posting the link Katana! I never use minis in my games, but I enjoy painting them. And seeing some Mystara specific ones would be awesome!

Like I said in my post in that thread, I would have loved to see a mini of Aleena.... *sigh*

And speaking of miniatures, here is a link to a company that makes cool miniatures based on pictures painted by Larry Elmore and Keith Parkinson:

Cool link Jesper! I hope these guys get around to making minis based on the art from the D&D basic set (Red box) and the rest of the Mentzer series!

To hijack this thread a bit, does anyone know of a miniature which can decently represent a hsiao?

Sorry, don't think there is anything close (at least that I can think of). There is a lot of very useful minis that could be made by WotC, but they seem to prefer half-illithid psionic were-dragons (sort-of ;) ). To be honest most of them are useful, but there are some that will just not be used IMCs.

On another note, I was thinking that the catfolk mini could possibly represent female Rakasta. Good or not-so-good?

I also use those d*** as shadow elves, making sure I remind the players as much as I can of their true description and that they are NOT the same as drow, I MEAN D***!

Here's a site with minis that James "Mystaros" Mishler pointed out several years ago.

Crocodile Games

Lots of Nithian-type minis. Could be used for Rakasta, Hutaaka (or possibly Lupins), Nagpa, Goat-Men, Gator Men, Rock Men, some lizard-type race that could possibly be used as Carnifex... Lots of good stuff there, though (as noted) all wearing/using Nithian style weapons and clothing.

Thanks for posting the link Cthul!

In addition to the nice minis there were alot of really nice illustrations there that I downloaded right away. Excellent for hand-outs for my next Mystara campaign...
