#1zombiegleemaxNov 24, 2004 12:59:04 | Hello everyone Me and some friends just recently decided to start a dark sun campaign. They didn't know this setting, I introduced it to them through those old DOS dark sun games which I played a lot and loved. So we all got interested and started researching. We found athas.org and downloaded the 3.5 rules. After reading most of the material at athas.org and other sites, I have some doubts about some things. I hope someone can help me. 1) In the dark sun games, you could only make female thri-kreen characters, why is that? I somehow thought that male thri-kreen would be savage and not so intelligent, but never found any reference to that. So male and female are equal? 2) I read in some site many characteristics of thri-kreen that aren't in the official material released at athas.org. Things like, six species of thri-kreen, thri-kreen having 180 degrees vision, natural ambidextery and being able to wield small weapons with the middle, smaller paws. So which of these are still true? If they all are, why there's no reference for this in the official release of DS3? (You can probably tell by now that I like thri-kreen very much This is my favorite race from dark sun, i'm planning on playing a thri-kreen druid) 3) In the dos games, every character had psionic abilities, despite the class. Does this still happens, or your class must be psychic warrior to have psionic abilities? 4) I downloaded a druid spells list from siltskimmer.net (very nice by the way) that list all spells a druid can have in dark sun. Some spells (like Defiler Scent and Nurturing Seeds) are exclusive to Athas, but there are no reference to them in the official material from athas.org. Why? 5) Where can I find a good world map of Athas. I've found the site darksunrise.info, that has a lot of maps, but I wanted one of the entire world, where can I find it? I'm pretty sure most of my questions can be answered from the old books, but where I live (Brasilia, Brazil) it's kinda hard to find a copy. Does anyone know where I can get them, if I can that is. Thanks in advance for all the help, and pardon any english mistakes |
#2zombiegleemaxNov 24, 2004 13:17:14 | Hello everyone You need to pick up a copy of the book, Thri-Kreen of Athas, it has so much Thri-Kreen goodness in there, it will make your head spin. Download it or buy it on ebay! |
#3zombiegleemaxNov 24, 2004 13:31:04 | Oh, that's great! But is it 3rd edition or AD&D 2nd edition? |
#4gabNov 24, 2004 13:41:30 | It's 2nd edition. BTW, you can buy it (and all 2nd edition books) for 5$US at SV Games. It's a great book about thri-kreen. For world maps you can go to: http://www.digitalwanderer.net/darksun/. |
#5zombiegleemaxNov 25, 2004 6:35:12 | So in DS3, none of those special rules apply to thri-kreen no more? Heh I'm really confused, if someone could enlighten me...! |
#6zombiegleemaxNov 25, 2004 6:38:45 | 5) Where can I find a good world map of Athas. I've found the site darksunrise.info, that has a lot of maps, but I wanted one of the entire world, where can I find it? Helo Chadda, I'm Brazilian too! And also I live in Brasilia! Nice to find fellows brazilians here. [i](Eu sou Brasileiro e moro em Brasília também! |
#7zombiegleemaxNov 25, 2004 7:32:36 | Hey Fabricio! Never thought I wound find someone else from Brasilia here! Such a small world we live in. :D Your site is really great, keep it up! I'll send you an e-mail later. Cheers! :D BTW If you can help me with some of those questions up there, it'd be great! |
#8KamelionNov 25, 2004 8:21:54 | Hey there Chadda Darkmane - welcome aboard! Just some quick replies to your questions - others will doubtless step in to shed some more light as well. 1) Male and female kreen are treated as equal under DS3e rules. I'm not familiar with the PC games so I couldn't say as to why the limit existed there and I don't recall any such limitation under 2e rules. Anyone else remember anything about this? 2) There are still six subspecies of kreen, but these are not specifically referenced in the Core Rules. If you check out the latest release of Terrors of Athas (DS3e monsters - see my sig for a link), the thri-kreen entry there mentions the differing subspecies and assigns each a different favoured class. Other than that, there is no difference between them under the current rules set. Something more may be done about this in the future but don't hold your breath. My best advice would be to get Thri-Kreen of Athas and incorporate whatever rules from there that you see fit (such as increased visual capacity, for example). Kreen no longer have automatic ambidexterity, but you can reproduce this to some degree by giving your kreen the multiattack and multiweapon fighting feats. Kreen can still wield weapons with all four claws - this is a general facet of D&D 3e rules for multiarmed creatures, though, so the rules for this aren't reprinted in the DS3e Core Rules. You'll find them in the PHB and MM. 3) Psionic powers are no longer automatic for all DS characters. If you want to have wild talents like in the PC game or the 2e rules, you need to take a feat (unless your DM rules otherwise - some do). There is the Wild Talent feat in the DS3 Core rules, and Hidden Talent in the Expanded Psionics Handbook - both give psionic powers to otherwise nonpsionic characters. 4) Defiler Scent and Nurturing Seeds are in DS3e Core Rules - see pages 56 and 62, respectively of the latest version of the download (unless mine is out of date, heh heh ). 5) Dark Sun Rising has the best maps of Athas, covering the entire published game world (Cyrus, you rule!). There are no official maps of the entire world, but a couple of fan-created versions exist. You'll find these at the Silt Skimmer's map page (Grumm, you also rule!). Good luck . |
#9zombiegleemaxNov 25, 2004 11:20:58 | Hey there Chadda Darkmane - welcome aboard! Guess You said everything that had to be said. |
#10zombiegleemaxNov 25, 2004 11:25:29 | Thanks for great answers Kamelion! Fabricio is right, I don't think there's anything else to be said. I didn't see those spells in the book, that was a little stupid of me, heh. :P Just one more question.. in DS 2e Druids would choose a patron element, like clerics. Not anymore, right? |
#11zombiegleemaxNov 25, 2004 11:37:50 | Thanks for great answers Kamelion! Fabricio is right, I don't think there's anything else to be said. Yeah, now they have what is called a patron "spirit of the land" usually represented by a geographical feature, a mountain, a big rock, a gorge or even a lake. Druids became much more territorial on the 3rd edition. |
#12jon_oracle_of_athasNov 25, 2004 11:42:14 | Might as well point you to the prestige class pdf now. It's in the downloads section. http://www.sederqvist.com/ao |
#13PennarinNov 25, 2004 11:51:39 | If you notice the fine print of the link, you can see www.athas.org's download section is at www.sederqvist.com ;) -me runs- |
#14zombiegleemaxNov 28, 2004 14:57:48 | I still play 2e, so I may answer the questions regarding to 2e. There is no difference between female and male thri-kreens. Thri-Kreen of Athas will give you lots of information about thri-kreens. It's a great book. But like all the official material, it's based on 2e. Every character has wild talent in 2e, but I don't know how it is changed in 3e. And you can find maps in DarkSun Campaing Setting, but if they changed it in 3e, I don't know about it. |
#15jon_oracle_of_athasNov 29, 2004 5:18:40 | We haven't changed the maps, and wild talents are resolved through feats. By default, they're not free, but a DM is free to change that. |
