Calendar confusion??

Ok, I need a little help with this one...

In the Karameikos gaz the month of Kaldmont is the first month of winter and Thaumont is the first month of spring.

But in the Glantri gaz, in the description of the months, Nuwmont is the first month of spring, Kaldmont is the last month of winter and Thaumont is the last month of spring.

But the first month of the year, in both nations, remains Nuwmont??

But the seasons, it seems, has shifted by two months

Any reasonable explaination for this?

Let's see, an explanation...

Nope, haven't got one, not even an idea. The Glantri gaz calander version doesn't make sense so I'd ignore it on the season issue. Helpfully someboby else can come up with something a little more insightful.

Explanation? Yeah. It's called a goof.

Many of the Gazetteers had a paragraph somewhere in them about a particular text disagreeing with previously published material. The rule of thumb is to go with the most recent printing. So, in this case, I would be inclined to refer to the last published calendar from the Almanacs.

Obviously Bruce Heard made a blunder in GAZ3, since ALL other Gazetteers and PWA refer to Kaldmont as the first month of Winter and Thaumont the first one of Spring.
WHich also makes sense since Kaldmont is December, Nuwmont is January and Thaumont is March ;)

You can safely ignore GAZ3 reference.

Now, if you talk about which month is the first in which calendar, in this case you may have different answers (i.e. Thyatian vs Dwarven vs Alphatian), but they all would agree that Spring/Winter/Summer/Fall begins in the same period of the year ;)

I've had problems too, with the calendar on p124 in the Karameikos Kingdom of Adventure box set.

The sidebar gives the months in the correct order - the double page spread is completely scrambled, no matter whether you read it across or down, except that it starts and finishes correctly. Confused me no end for a while.

Excellent! Thank you all for your replies. Hard to believe I have been playing for 14 years and didn't spot it until now :D

The problem you are describing was acknowledged by Bruce Heard in Dragon Magazine during the Princess Ark run in one of the Q&A sections.

Bruce agreed that GAZ3 is in error(I though some other gazeteers had the same problem?). He said to adjust the calendar to fit GAZ1, and keep the holidays as is, unless they depend on the season, in which case to move them to the right season.

IIRC, there's a related goof with the Alphatian calendar. The first month of the Alphatian year is the anniversary of Alphatian Landfall, not the first day of spring, and is offset one month from the Thyatian calendar's month progressions. Yet events such as the Day of Dread still happen on the last day of the Alphatian year! More than a bit odd...
