teaser to attract players- long

Dec 05, 2004 21:57:52 I used the following as a brief "teaser" to recruit for my new Dark Sun campaign (thank you so much, Athas.org!). It has shown remarkable results.

Athas is a harsh land brought to the edge of destruction by life-stealing magics. Slaves toil endlessly beneath the brutal sun, wringing from the blasted earth enough sustenance to keep starvation at bay for just one more day. Dwarves dedicate their lives to projects beyond the scope of men with such intensity that, should they fail, they will roam as relentless undead for eternity. Elven tribes race across the blighted landscape, abandoning those too weak to keep up as prey for marauding predators, packs of stalking insect-men, and savage halfling hunters in a desert wilderness where even the flowers kill.

Amid the barren wastelands of Athas lie the scattered city-states, each in the grip of its own tyrannical sorcerer-king. Protecting their own positions with life-stealing magic, they demand absolute obedience. The restless mobs are placated with bread and circuses- the arenas overflow with spectators seeking release from their harsh lives.

Above it all, the Dragon ravages the world, leaving a trail of destruction wherever He treads. Even the Sorcerer Kings tremble when the Dragon arrives to collect His horrific “tithe”.

Athas is a land of deadly magic and powerful creatures that offers no promise of glory or even of survival. Those who do not possess sufficient cunning or strength will surely perish, leaving nothing but bones cracked and bleached under the Dark Sun.

As you can see, some of it is lifted from the back cover of the campaign boxed set and I'm sure there's some other unintentional plagairism in there as well.

The purpose was to give a very brief glimpse of Dark Sun for when that inevitable question of "What world do you gm?" comes up and to pique the interest of players.

I understand that the current fervor on the boards is about getting the athas.org version published. This summary was not meant as a tag-along but as a seperate subject.

Thank you for checking the legality of what was posted and if it becomes part of something greater woohoo! but the original intention was to give a successfully tested campaign setting blurb for gms recruiting/initiating players.

So, too wordy?
