Hello together!

Although these polls that are kinda *exchange of general private informations* have proven to be not very popular, I want to give it a try one more time.

As D&D players, many, if not most of us tend to get interested not only by one specific setting you can play with the rulebooks, but at least get info what other stuff is around.

So, what would you call your favourite setting next to Greyhawk (which I suppose you like, as you're reading a thread on a Greyhawk - board... ;) )
???

I would find it interesting to see where people get their inspiriations for gaming/imagining fantasy worlds and events from!

------------------------------------------------------
Personally, besides Greyhawk, I go for Ravenloft, which I always tend to play as a darker alternative to WoG, kinda what somewhere earlier was called *Greyhawk Noir*...

I'll admit that I really like the Eberron Campaign Setting although I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

I too am fond of the several times I ran Ravenloft. I've never ran it in 3.x though, maybe someday.... :D

MIDNIGHT, no question about that. Deep immersion roleplaying possibilities with all the same D&D hack n' slash if you want it. Midnight is extremely dark, gothic, and at times oppressive. But it is the light of the Heroes that shines forth, and every little spark of hope that holds the world from the brink. Next to GREYHAWK, Midnight is the best setting IMO.

Ebberon. Although I have nostalgia for Dark Sun, I doubt I'd want to run a campaign these days.

Not a D&D setting, but I currently play in a Warhammer RPG game. The Warhammer world is a cool setting and has several adventures that are all-time classics. I'm looking forward to Green Ronin's version next year...

I liked the Ravenloft setting in its early days. I look back at Feast of Goblyns with fondness. I also played in a long Ravenloft boxed-set adventure that involved lots of time shifts. It was fantastic and very original (but I sadly can't remember the name of it).

I have to agree with Omote that Midnight is something special. I like Midnight as a change of pace from the standard D&D fare.

I'd love to sample other campaign settings but I just don't have the time or shelf space!

I put up nearly the same poll on Canonfire and the results where as follows...

48% Others (this could include Scarred Lands, Dark Sun, Call of Cthulthu, Mystara, Everquest, Birthright, Al-Qadim, Kingdoms of Kalamar, Oriental Adventures, Maztica, and the nearly limitless amount of other game worlds)
20% Conan
18% Eberron
17% Forgotten Realms
8% Ravenloft
5% Lord of the Rings
5% Dragonlance
4% Wilderlands
3% Wheel of Time
4% Shadowrun
2% Star Wars

I was absolutely surprised that heavy hitters like, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars had not received more overall support.

Anyway, Conan would deffinately be my 2nd choice, but I do already play LoTR. (Decipher, not MERP)

Call of Cthulu - now that had atmosphere. With D&D my other favourite setting was the original 1st Ed. Realms without the subsequent power-personalities that crept in.

Its been years since I played Warhammer RPG (1987), but it was enjoyable and had an Eberron feel to it.

Forgotten realms would be my second (distant) choice of published D&D settings... when not playing greyhawk I prefer to use my own campaign world, which I have been developing since the eighties...

I really liked Shadowrun, some other Games were Role Master although the system is crazy, then their's bit's and pieces of other game systems such as Ars Magica and then not really a game world but a company called Mayfair games used to put out decent source materials to draw from. White Wolf' Vampire and Gurps also has some good tidbits to draw from.

But besides my own Homebrew world it's Good old Greyhawk!

That's interesting. I'm not too surprised that a fair number of 'Hawkers like Conan (but maybe that's because I do).

Given that 48% picked "Others", it may be worth it to try that poll again with more specific options (like the ones you listed). Well, whether it's actually worth it to poll again, it would be interesting to know.

I started playing in Grey Hawk and loved it. Other than GH... my next was the Forgotten Realms setting.

I much prefer the original (1st and 2nd Edition D&D) to the new system. I did buy the new rule books...well the 3.0 ones but none of the people i game with is interested in trying it since they say they already have most of the old material so why buy the new stuff. They say they have been there and done that with Paladium a few years ago.

We play WW Vampire & Mage, WW Exalted (WW's version of D&D), HERO system Champions and Call of Cthulhu.... oh and am in one 2nd edition D&D game.

I run Greyhawk but my favorite setting is Dark Sun. The people at Athas.org have done a phenomenal job of bringing the setting up to 3.5.

I use Dark Sun politics, monsters, and mentality for many areas of Greyhawk and it works out very well. Gives my Greyhawk an extremely gritty feel.

Aerdi and the Bandit Kingdoms, specifically, look like what Dark Sun was just before they went to heck.

I've run cross-over campaigns that were very successful.

Historical Earth with liberal doses of fantasy.

Yeah, I like that too. I'm about to start DMing one of these. Roughly 7th century Europe, Middle East, and northern Africa, not only with liberal doses of fantasy, but also a fair number of anachronisms.

That's one of the things I like about the Hyborian Age, actually. An alternate history of Earth.

In terms of D&D, I enjoy Mystara a lot, not because it is a great concept, but rather because it was much better done than most of others D&D settings. Another good one is Birthright, not only it has a very nice concept but also it was pretty well developed. Finally, I enjoy Call of Cthulhu's Lovecraftian Earth and the setting from 2300 AD.

I've enjoyed a number of roleplaying games in my life. Regarding the genre of fantasy, after Greyhawk, the campaign setting I most preferred was the Old World of the Warhammer: Fantasy Roleplay system. (It's neat to hear that Green Ronin will be publishing something derived from this setting.)

I've only read a few bits about Eberron from Dungeon, but if it has succeeded in following Warhammer's lead in imagining a violent setting with uncaring gods, kudos for its authors.

A relatively new campaign setting that I enjoy greatly is the Iron Kingdoms of Privateer Press. While the publication schedule has been slow and inconsistent, this is the best new campaign setting I've seen. Beyond the care taken with its design, I like its attempt to innovate the d20 system to represent the complexity of human ethnicities and cultures.

That were cool names you brought into play!

...
I was absolutely surprised that heavy hitters like, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars had not received more overall support.
...

I find that interesting, too.
It may result out of the book-buying policy of most of us roleplayers .
My friends and I mostly only buy books of settings we don't already know if we feel that we might get to use at least some little aspect from them.

Sometimes this may end up with us liking the setting so much that we even start to play a campaign there - in my case, this is how I came to DM Ravenloft.

The consequence of my theory is that people who are already long-time players of a fantasy - setting usually won't buy stuff for sci - fi games, but look for material they can possibly include in their cmapaigns.

Also, I think that *stories with an ending climax* are no good RPG worlds.
What can I milk from Middle Earth when Sauron is defeated?
When the Archenemy is overthrown by the Dragon, what kind of campaign will I play with WoT?

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Harn. I've never had the opportunity to play it, but the source material is soooo dark ages.

:D Yeah, try playing Greyhawk with the Harn rules. In short, it is an absolute nightmare!! *After one battle you draw against infecting your wounds and dying...*

For fantasy setting, I also use Dark Sun, Al-Qadim and Kara-Tur with my Greyhawk campaign, so they are my choice. I use Al-Qadim for the Baklunish land west of Zeif. I use the Dark Sun setting for western part of the lost Suel Empire, and Kara-Tur for Oriental setting (even if it is Occidental of Flanaess ;) ).

Other type of campaign I like:
The campaigns designed by GDW (Twillight 2000, Dark Conspiracy and Traveller 2300); and

The World of Darkness universe by White Wolf.

Assuming one discounts fun fictional settings like Melniboné, then in my very unbiased opinion (ahem ), I'll have to go with The Valus: details at http://www.diffworlds.com/valus.htm :D :D
