#1omoteDec 06, 2004 16:23:06 | I got my issue of #118 a couple of hours ago. I havn't read much of the content of the mag yet, but the THRONE OF IUZ does look really cool. However, the GREYHAWK MAP SECTION #1 is spectacular (IMO)! Bravo. *claps* The only problem that I have with it is that it is printed on very light paper stock. But that really is not a prob, I plan on laminating it anyways. I really wanted to see major roadways mapped out, but now looking at the actual map, even at this large, roads would really clutter up the goodness. No doubt, best GH map to date. ...now, when does #119 get here! Ahh I can't wait! ;) .................................Omote FPQ |
#2mortellanDec 07, 2004 2:26:21 | I've seen only a new thumbnail of it in Dragon. Even at that size it looks awesome! For those who inquire it is the SW quadrant, showing areas like Keoland, Greyhawk, Celene and my personal obsession Ull. Yeehaw. :D |
#3MortepierreDec 07, 2004 4:15:21 | Weird, the latest preview on the Paizo website seems to indicate it's the NW quadrant. Can we get a confirmation Omote? |
#4ElendurDec 07, 2004 10:49:26 | Huzzah! I wonder if in a few months they'll release an online version of it? Like the Eberron map? That one's sweet. |
#5mortellanDec 07, 2004 12:14:01 | Weird, the latest preview on the Paizo website seems to indicate it's the NW quadrant. Can we get a confirmation Omote? Actually the NW quadrant would make more sense given the included adventure Throne of Iuz, but...there is also the 2nd part of the Istivin thing. So, let's see what Omote sez. |
#6omoteDec 07, 2004 14:15:03 | It is definately the NW quadrant featuring of course Zeif, the Vesve, Lands of Iuz, etc. The map is split (on the right) right down the center of the Rovers of the Barrens and part of the Shield Lands. The southern cut-off goes all the way to the south where the cut off is one hex south of Greyhawk. Really the map is very well done. The colors are great and obviously the map is inspired by the Darlene map (especially the colors). However the mountains are drawn more rigid and sharp (realistic if you will), and lighter in color. The villages, towns, cities, castles, and dungeons are clearly marked on the map in a thin font, but bold enough so that they are easily located. There is only one ICON on the map I havn't figured out yet. The icon is a black pyramid shape. The index of the map doesn't say what the small black pyramid shape is supposed to represent. .........................Omote FPQ |
#7zombiegleemaxDec 08, 2004 1:45:37 | Black pyramid? Hmmm. Interesting. Sounds like Erik is perhaps alluding to a future adventure. Coming to a gaming magazine near you? |
#8MortepierreDec 08, 2004 2:53:17 | There is only one ICON on the map I havn't figured out yet. The icon is a black pyramid shape. The index of the map doesn't say what the small black pyramid shape is supposed to represent. If you tell us where it is located, maybe we can try to guess what it is? |
#9scoti_garbidisDec 08, 2004 8:20:52 | Could it be the black pyramid of mass confusion? I DONT KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P |
#10omoteDec 08, 2004 10:05:28 | I don't think it's eluding to anything. Exag in Perrenland is noted with a black triangle, so is the Free City of Greyhawk. What do you think? ...Maybe it's supposed to be the notation for a free city with no affiliation with a specific kingdom... maybe? ..................................Omote FPQ |
#11MortepierreDec 08, 2004 10:54:31 | Two ideas spring to mind: 1) black pyramid = location of a hidden temple to Tharizdun 2) location of the future adventures of the next Adventure Path of Dungeon |
#12erik_monaDec 08, 2004 13:02:24 | 3) The location of a free city. --Erik Mona Editor-in-Chief Dragon & Dungeon |
#13zombiegleemaxDec 08, 2004 13:25:37 | Ofcourse he doesn't name it for those of us that don't have it! |
#14erik_monaDec 08, 2004 13:51:58 | All the free cities get the black triangle icon. Off the top of my head, that means Exag, Greyhawk, Roland, Outnsey, Rel Astra, Dyvers, and possibly Verbobonc. Probably a couple others. --Erik |
#15zombiegleemaxDec 08, 2004 14:30:30 | So being in the NW quadrant, it has to be Exag, Verbobonc, Highfolk or Dyvers! Which is missing the label? Curious minds want to know ;) |
#16omoteDec 08, 2004 16:32:46 | In looking at the map now, the only free cities on the NW quadrant map are Exag, Highfolk, and Greyhawk. The others are not on this portion of the map. I see now, I don't know why I didn't think of Free Cities in the first place. ..................................Omote FPQ |
#17grodogDec 08, 2004 23:41:09 | Still not here yet.... |
#18ividDec 09, 2004 2:59:21 | ... :embarrass :embarrass :embarrass Online version...? |
#19MortepierreDec 09, 2004 3:46:52 | ...Online version...? Given the map is an incentive to buy Dungeon, don't expect one any time soon... |
#20omoteDec 09, 2004 8:57:52 | Although I think somewhere down the line it would be nice to release the complete GH map as a seperate item from Paizo. Heck, give it a year or so and Paizo could releases a "best of" GH book, or box set from the pages of Dungeon Magazine... is somebody listening to me (Erik)? ;) ...............................Omote FPQ |
#21mortellanDec 09, 2004 10:16:32 | Online version...? The Eberron map they put in Dungeon mere months ago already has a downloadable online revision and errata on this very site. |
#22HalberkillDec 09, 2004 11:28:58 | The Eberron map they put in Dungeon mere months ago already has a downloadable online revision and errata on this very site. Yeah, but that is more along the lines of advertisement costs for a product on the market. Greyhawk has no product on the market to advertise, therefore there is no reason to release it for free. Halber |
#23AmarilDec 09, 2004 13:00:27 | Yeah, but that is more along the lines of advertisement costs for a product on the market. Greyhawk has no product on the market to advertise, therefore there is no reason to release it for free. Sure there is... Dungeon Magazine. Now that we're all experts on the matter... |
#24ividDec 10, 2004 3:14:23 | Given the map is an incentive to buy Dungeon, don't expect one any time soon... My problem that my retailer wants 15(!!!) ⁈ for it - and that's more than I pay for a regular rpg book. No way will I give that money to that shark! ;) Mr. Mona, can't you do something so that European readers of your mag can enjoy it for a fair price, too? |
#25HalberkillDec 10, 2004 13:49:42 | Sure there is... Dungeon Magazine. Now that we're all experts on the matter... Don't be trite, just because someone isn't an expert on a subject, doesn't mean they have to shut up about the matter. I gave an informed opinion, you can disagree with it, but don't belittle me. That said, this is already advertising Dungeon well enough even without it being free. Though of course you are more than welcome to ignore me and ask Erik Mona himself. Halber |
#26manindarknessDec 10, 2004 14:01:03 | My problem that my retailer wants 15(!!!) ⁈ for it - and that's more than I pay for a regular rpg book. No way will I give that money to that shark! ;) I'm under the impression that a subscription would be cheaper... or just buying one magazine online at Paizo. |
#27AmarilDec 10, 2004 14:17:54 | Don't be trite, just because someone isn't an expert on a subject, doesn't mean they have to shut up about the matter. My apologies; I admit that was rude of me. My point was that an online, low-resolution, small-scale version could act as a preview of the the larger, printed Greyhawk maps and could entice potential buyers to get the magazine. |
#28MortepierreDec 11, 2004 4:28:22 | I'm under the impression that a subscription would be cheaper... or just buying one magazine online at Paizo. And you would be right. I am european and have a subscription (pretty much thanks to the amount of GH materials Erik has been putting in Dungeon lately) which cost me barely 6 $ per issue (including shipping). Now, THAT is what I call a good deal! |
#29ividDec 11, 2004 13:14:12 | And you would be right. I am european and have a subscription (pretty much thanks to the amount of GH materials Erik has been putting in Dungeon lately) which cost me barely 6 $ per issue (including shipping). Now, THAT is what I call a good deal! :raincloud In my heart I feel the most pure... envy!!! ;) Yeah, will check the Paizo site for some better way to get the mag. Thank you, Man in Darkness; apart from ebay! e-commerce and electronic ordering still remain a mystery to me... |
#30HalberkillDec 13, 2004 14:31:17 | My apologies; I admit that was rude of me. My point was that an online, low-resolution, small-scale version could act as a preview of the the larger, printed Greyhawk maps and could entice potential buyers to get the magazine. Accepted. Greyhawkers are sometimes overly passionate, but rarely ever truly rude. Though if I may add, I also would definately like to see a "legal" electronic version myself. Halber |
#31YeomanDec 14, 2004 1:37:04 | Just had a quick flick through this issue. The map is great - brings back happy memories, and hopefully new players to the setting. I like the Throne of Iuz setting (but will take a while to get used to Orcs with THAT many HPs ) Overall a good solid mag. |
#32omoteDec 15, 2004 11:55:45 | AHHHHH! *******!!! (am I allowed to say *******?) Anyways, back to the map thing. I liked the map so much I went to my local massively large chain printing and copying store to have them laminate the map. Lo and behold the moron behind the counter didn't have the machine's heat turned up high enough and caused some of the map to turn white and the rest of it to have bubbles all over it! Ruined. Lost. Of no use. I'm glad I picked up a few copies of the mag. I will try again at ANOTHER priting & copying store. A bit of me died that day. On a side note, my FLGS sold out of their stock of Dungeon #118. They only get 4 copies every month, but they still sold out in under a week. .........................Omote FPQ |
#33AmarilDec 15, 2004 12:01:01 | I was so impressed with the map that I want to frame them either indivudually or all together in one frame. I would never risk laminating because I know laminations can get screwed up. |
#34ividDec 15, 2004 14:05:06 | AHHHHH! *******!!! (am I allowed to say *******?) That reminds me of the day my father accidentally *crushed* He - Man's left arm... |
#35dmstueDec 17, 2004 3:19:22 | That reminds me of the day my father accidentally *crushed* He - Man's left arm... At last the truth is revealed!! Ivids Father is Skeletor!!!! :OMG! Nevermind Drow on Oerth ...... |
#36ElendurDec 17, 2004 11:33:00 | Man oh man is that map nice. Also nice is the downloadable maps and handouts from the paizo site. While I don't plan on running the Istivin adventures, I'm currently running G1, and the Istivin Hinterlands Map is perfect for that. To me, the map is the essence of a campaign. Spreading the map out on the table and looking at all the strange names and places and wondering 'what goes on there?'. That's the strength of a good campaign setting to me. Not telling stories but providing a place for the DM and player's stories to live. |
#37MortepierreDec 17, 2004 14:26:50 | Just received my issue of Dungeon. The map is - to quote others - GREAT! It even has Castle Hart on it, which - to me - pretty much screams 'quality design'. My only problem is that it doesn't look or feel sturdy. Laminating it or locking it in a vault seem like the only viable options |
#38ividDec 18, 2004 10:49:09 | At last the truth is revealed!! Mmmmh... I used to call him *Hordak* when I was a child... *And sometimes TEELA, when I was mocking him...* :D |
