If a wizard\sorceror has a familiar and takes levels in a prestige class that improves the wizard\sorceror's spellcasting level does this also improve the familiar's abilities?

If not, why?

Opinions and official stuff would be appreciated. Thanks.

The familiar abilities do not improve as you take on a prestige class. It's sort of a balancing factor.

Unless the Prestige Class specifically states otherwise.

Does anyone know of any PrC that does increase a familiar's abilties? Cause I ain't seen one yet that does.

On a flavor note, are there any historical DL wizards that even had familiars? I can't think of any and have been mulling over replacing a wizards familiar with something else while leaving it on the sorceror.

remember Legends? When Tas puts on the ring that turned him into a mouse, the wizard there thought he was a familiar. There is precedence for such a thing.

Huh, don't recall that one, I'll have to reread it. Whoops.

That just means people know what they are, not that any of them have one. Spend your 100 steel on something else, that's what I always say.

Guerrand from defenders of magic had one, a sea gull if I recall correctly. He was also the first White Robe assigned to the Lost Sentinel.

I need an opinion on a feat in Complete Arcane. It is called "Obtain Familiar" on page 81. What I would like to know is 1 - Does this feat grant a second familiar to those who already possess the ability to call a familiar, and 2 - Does this feat increase the abilities of a pre-existing familiar.

One-Eyed Kate in DoSF had a raven familiar, if you're looking for a specific example.

If your first familiar was NOT gained by virtue of you being a sorcerer or wizard, then you could get a second familiar by the rules as written. However, the feat wouldn't increase an existing familiar's abilities. You could make a new feat for that, though.

Also, you can't take the feat twice to get two familiars.

The Rogue/Wizard/Spellfiltch in my group insisted on having a familiar even though he has a minimal number of pure Wiz levels that 'count' for it. A wisecracking raven named "Jim" after Jim Warfield, the excentric propriator of the legendary (at least in Northen Illinois and the surrounding area) Raven's Grin Inn.

I don't think he's actually 'used' it for a single thing, but its lead to some good RP.

I dunno if it is the same Guerrand, but there is a red robe by that name in Night of the Eye who had a Sea Gull fammiliar...I think Zagarus is it's name.

Well, since having two familiars doesn't fit [flavor wise] I'd say the levels stacked....but by the written rules, you could gain two familiars through this feat.

It is the same Guerrand but I thought he was a White robe. Oh well, I have been wrong before.

Guerrand was indeed a red robe, and his familiar Zagarus the seagull.

That very same instance has the wizard warn Tasslehoff of Marigold, a familiar of another wizard.
