#1zombiegleemaxJan 08, 2005 2:46:49 | I was reading thru the 2nd Edition Monstrous Compendium, and I like the following monsters: Tayling/Taylang Phaethon Astral Dragon mated pair Tylor Hatori And I was wondering if anyone's used these creatures and how they used them. |
#2NivedJan 08, 2005 3:35:27 | Tayfolk: Nope Phaethons: Yep, one of the PCs in my current campaign is a Phaethon Monk/Cleric of Habbakuk. His name is "Talon" or at least that's what he goes by out in the world. The player is aiming for the Sacred Fist PrC from Complete Divine (which I think fits a Phaethons VERY well), I'm going to surprise him a bit though. When Talon gets high enough level in Sacred Fist to gain the sacred flame ability of the class (channeling fire/divine power into their fists) his firey wings are going to turn blue. Alah Habbakuk's aspect as the Blue Phoenix. I thought of this months ago and I've been patiently waiting for him to reach his goal so I can spring this on the player. I think he'll like it. This is the KoD, SoS, PoC campaign, and Phaethons play a role in the second module, works well for the character though, glad it didn't come back to haunt me. Astral Dragons? Nope. Tylor: I want to use one quite badly and will probably write one into SoS if its not there already... Maybe as a Knight of Neraka's mount... Hatori: No real plans. |
#3cam_banksJan 08, 2005 9:01:58 | The tayling and taylang (collectively known as tayfolk) have had their background updated and made current, and are in the Bestiary of Krynn for 3rd edition. So are the hatori and tylor. The phaethons are in Key of Destiny and Spectre of Sorrows, the new campaign adventures for 3rd edition. The astral dragons are no longer part of Dragonlance continuity. Cheers, Cam |

I have been searching everywhere for the Krynn Beastiary, and I can't find it! Is it out now? How come Astral Dragons are no longer around? I like the concept behind them. How about kodragons? I see you posted over at dragonlance.com. Are you sovereign press staff by chance? |

I like the concept behind them. How about kodragons? I see you posted over at dragonlance.com. Are you sovereign press staff by chance? I'm one of the Bestiary of Krynn's two authors, and yes, it's been released. It came out last year, and you should still be able to find copies at gaming stores or large retain bookstores. Otherwise, try http://www.margaretweis.com or your favorite online gaming supplier. Astral dragons and kodragons no longer fit into official Dragonlance continuity, which doesn't ascribe the origin of dragons to Deion and Procene. This was a fairly significant change from the established history and was introduced into Dragonlance with Rick Swan's DLE-series trilogy of modules, which was published before the 2nd edition DL Monstrous Compendium. Apart from those modules and the DLMC entries, astral dragons and kodragons haven't shown up in novels or products and their background is apocryphal. We didn't include either of them in the Bestiary for this reason (and because we thought the kodragons were very silly indeed). Cheers, Cam |
#6zombiegleemaxJan 10, 2005 5:49:00 | Kodragons are cool. Little dragon messengers. I own Rick Swan's Book of RPG Reviews from 15 or so years back. I still have many of the DnD books he wrote or contributed to as well. Where is he these days and what's he up to? And what about Jeff Grubb? There's another one who's vanished! |
#7zombiegleemaxJan 13, 2005 17:09:14 | I used the 1st and 2nd modules of the DLE in my Age of Mortal campaign and so I used the kodragon in the 2nd one, the kender in the group got along wonderfully with them. 1st edition D&D had Astral dragons before Dragonlance did I believe. |
#8zombiegleemaxJan 13, 2005 17:33:07 | I have only used the Tylor and Hatori. I think that go great with rural scenarios, and inexperienced players (although the Tylor have to be downscaled for this to work) They are good monsters in the monster sense, strange creatures on the rural egde of civilasation. I like their update in the beastiary, but I mainly use them downgscaled. |
#9wolf72Jan 14, 2005 16:07:03 | tylor and hatori ... use them like wyverns ... not as deadly as a dragon |
#10ferratusJan 17, 2005 14:50:53 | I wish the Phaeton's had been in the bestiary. They are a popular enough monster that they would be frequently used and thus would be nice to have them to be easily referenced without dragging the Key of Destiny along. (It would have been nice to have some DLCS and AoM monsters in there too). As for the Astral Dragons and Kodragons, I use them. I've just dumped the backstory. I use Astral Dragons and Ethereal Dragons to complement the Shadow Dragons. In fact, I can't see how you can have Shadow Dragons without the other two to represent the other sides of the balance. I use kodragon's as wizard familiars. As far as I'm concerned, they fit just as well into the setting as pseudodragons. Heck, as a wizard I want a scribal secretary and convenient flying portable hole more than I want a little dragon that acts like a kitty-cat. The backstory is always brought out as a reason why they cannot be adapted to 3e, but nobody has ever explained why we can't keep the monsters and dump the backstory. |
