#1zombiegleemaxJan 21, 2005 18:57:26 | So I was taking a cursory glance through the Vaults of Pandius (forgive me if my faulty short-term memory caused me to misspell that) in search of a list of all the Mystara reference books that TSR put out. In other words, aside from the brief mentions in the various OD&D boxes and the Rules Compendium concerning the Known World, what did TSR put out that's specifically for Mystara, the Known World, Hollow World, or Red Steel/Savage Baronies? Is there such a list already compiled? Thanks! |

(and looking at the FAQ, hmmm maybe I should update that) |

I've only every seen bad things written about the Dragonlord Chronicles although I haven't read these ones myself. I've read the Penhaligon Trilogy and they were nothing too fancy. I don't know about the others. There's some reviews on the review site http://reviews.dnd.starflung.com/, although I don't know how many are there but that should be a good start. |

I recently reread the Penhaligon Trilogy and found that they arent as bad as I remembered them to be. Back then I was really annoyed that they contained contradictions with the Gazeteers (small ones) and with the D&D rules, but that didnt bother me as much this time around. The Dragonlord Trilogy is much better researched. The story didnt exactly blow me away, but it is decent, and they characters are pretty interesting. I also like how it was set in a different time period that most Mystara campaigns. "Dark Knight of Karameikos" and "The Black Vessel" are probably the best Mystara novels out there. I also read Son of Dawn a few months back and found it to be cute, though since it was written for kids it left alot to be desired in terms of the story and the way things were presented. I loved how all sort of cute Mystara tid bits showed up though. Don't look up the Mystara novels if you are looking for good literature. Even compared to the Gaming works of Hickman/Weiss and Salvatore, the Mystara novels will fall short. However, I think they can provide inspiration for the setting aswell as ideas that can be used in your campaigns. HÃ¥vard |
