In Planescape there are two races, the Phirblas and the Dabus, who are sufficiently similar as to warrant a closer look. Both visually communicate using some form of floating script, and both float a gnats whisker above the ground. Given these rather odd characteristics in common, it is not unlikely that they are related species. Now, Dabuses aren't slaves to the Lady, they have free will, as Fell demonstrates, so they need not all serve her. Perhaps the Dabus were originally drawn from Phirblas stock, and not all the Phirblas wanted to serve the Lady. Maybe she just didn't need all of them.

Then came 3rd ed. With it are two new races which share one of these characteristics, the writing and symbols suspended about their heads. The quell are undead creatures detailed in Libris Mortis, who can use their powers to prevent clerics using their divinely granted abilities. The Illumians are detailed in Races of Destiny. They are humans transformed by the magical sigils which still circle their heads. Now I can see the Illumians and the Quell being linked, since some Illumians, probably either the worshippers of Wathaku or members of Gravewhisper cabals, would be interested in limiting clerics power or creating undead, respectively, and if they were created from Illumians it might explain why they have sigils whirling about their heads.

It's not hard to imagine that Phirblas and Dabus are linked, nor that Quell and Illumians are linked. What then might link the Illumians and Quell with the Dabus and Phirblas? Well, I would guess that a portion of the magic which created the Ritual of Words Made Flesh came from a Phirblas source, with or without the permission of the Phirblas. The phirblas also have something of a similar mindset to the Illumians, with their meritocratic society, albeit far less heirarchical than that of the Illumians.

What do you think?
