Has anyone ran the enounter with the red dragon Soulburn yet? If so how did it go down. My group will soon be encountering him and I'm interested on whether the encounter was deadly or not.

Thanks!

I had to make him a lot older, but the encounter was a lot of fun! Red dragons are very, very dangerous.

Yes, they were all around 12th level. I introduced Soulburn and Sindra much earlier, when the heroes were still in Ak-Khurman. I'm a firm believer in having the big bads show up early, scare the crap out of folks and then not coming back until later. I did the same thing with the Betrayer, who in my campaign resides in the body of a female Kagonesti elf (a former PC).

Thats a cool twist. So far all I've eluded to was Grigolthan thru the meeting with the Oracles. The PC's were a little apprehensive about confronting a Ogre Mage with a rod of indiscernible make or power.

Yeah, it was pretty funny, since I sprang Soulburn on them while they were still climbing the Peak. Stuck out in the open with naught but little cracks and crevices on the face of the volcano, with a red dragon bearing down on them. Needless to say, they panicked quite a bit. They got toasted fairly well, but managed to do enough damage to Soulburn to drive him away. I was surprised how well it went for the group given that they were only about 6th level (average) when they faced him. Oddly enough, they haven't tried to track him down since clearing the Peak.

To stall for time for the next book, I had a random scounting party of sligs capture the kender prisoners while the group was fighting Sindra and Grigolthan. They started back down the hall the ants told them about, when they got sneak attacked by 2 of the true kender that eluded capture. The Kender told the group what happened to the rest of their group, which lead on a merry chase through the volcano, up to the serpent cave. There, they had to deal with reduced visibility (I provided a low level lightsource as bioluminescent moss/fungus) with fog from humidity/mists associated with rainforests reducing the visibility even further. So they skirted around the edges of the chamber (which I tripled in size from the book's description). Hearing the distant roar of a strange beast really played up the 'Jurassic Park' feel of the chamber. Once they went into the forest proper, they were able to detect smoke from a fire that they traced back to the slig village. After the eventual skirmish and misadventures (like the party scout being knocked unconscious by a single shocker lizard, then being taken prisoner) they found the kender prisoners AGAIN. Little do they know, I've placed a mole in the group of Kender to introduce another little sideplot later. Goodtimes.
