How does Sean Reynolds's new adventure in Dungeon #120 work in a Greyhawkish context? It makes a great start with the title.

Only having time to read the first few pages of this adventure, I can tell you that THE LOST TEMPLE OF DEMOGORGON is "nominally set... in Irongate." In paging through it I see a few other Greyhawk references, particularly about Ahlissa.

It mentions that Queen Ehlissa was Flan. I though she was Oeridian?

I'm thinking of whether it fits with the feel of the setting. Lots of Dungeon adventures have nominal World of Greyhawk connections but aren't written for the setting and don't have any particular affinity with it. "Lost Temple" sounds different.

No, Queen Ehlissa ruled Flan Kingdom (around -1100cy IIRC) which was located where South Province was. New United Kingdom of Ahlissa took it's name from this kindgom.

I hope they linked that adventure to the "Demogorgon & the Death Knights" article that was published in Dragon (issues #290 & 291) :whatsthis

Thats basically the premise for the adventure, one of the deathknights is looking to reverse the curse and busts into an ancient temple devoted to Demogorgon.

It was a mixed bag for me, the whole deathknights - Demogorgon seemed an ill conceived marriage to begin with combine that with awakened babboons and gorillas and place it near Irongate... it just doesn't fit my style of Greyhawk play but then I am sure some people will love it. If you buy into the whole ancient temple placed into stasis bit then it certainly works for what it is.

That's how I feel. It is a good adventure for 14th level characters, and it is solidly set in Greyhawk, in the Iron Hills, complete with mention of the Scarlet Brotherhood and their recent machinations in the region.

But as noted above, Demogorgon seems like a poor choice as the fashioner of Greyhawk's Death Knghts. While I really like both artciles regarding the Death Knights in Dragon, I like the idea of making Hextor as the fell power behind the creation of the Death Knights. It give the Herald a of Hell a stronger tie to the world and another aspect of his grim power and will. I also think Nerull would have been a good choice. As a Flan deity, Nerull seems good because if he created the Death Knights, it would be as a scourge and mockery of the Oeridian people that displaced his Flan worshippers. But, the author has said that the Demogorgon take is a nod to 1st Edition days- kind of like an homage to that age of D&D bad guys. I respect that.

Back to the thread's topic - Lost Temple of Demogorgon has potential because of the fiendish war apes, which are interesting monsters. I also like the troglodyte tie-in and the references to their former age of glory. And the combat at the end with Tellax, The Great Beast, Khayven, et. al. looks pretty brutal - even for high level characters.

The Death knights' attachment to Demogorgon extends back to the original Fiend Folio write up. Why they didn't use someone like Orcus is odd as any alternative choice.

Well, unlike most, I have always been fond of DG as a villan. And, probably a testament to my age, Demogorgon has always been affiliated with Death Knights in my mind. I loved the adventure, though the baboons and apes were a little disagreeable. They just didn't seem to fit my idea of Ahlissa. In another location, I don't think it would be so unsettling in my mind. However, overall, Kudos to all.
