Artificier in Dragonlance

So...I basically give my players a bunch of options when it comes to picking races and classes. Especially classes... I like to think that with all the variety out there, it isnt hard to imagine there being all sorts of classes that people are. So my new thought is.. let one of them play an Artificier.

I looked over the class in the Eberron CS and its not a bad class at all. Its pretty neat, with lots of support ability. Also they can make some magical items, which is always a good thing. Of course you give up some XP, but the curve does shorten if you go by the XP chart.

I thought about limiting it to "strange" gnomes who have developed a little bit of ambient magic. I mean, infusions would just be another type of spells. And who knows the extent of ambient magic and how diverse it is? Havent really figured out if I'd let a different race be it... I guess I just think it'd be nice to see one or two PC gnomes heh

Was just wondering if anyone really looked over the class and liked it. Or if anyone also plays Eberron sometimes. I've bought the CS and Sharn: City of Towers and I actually like the world and the way its set up. It has a lot of neat things... I especially like the way they do gods in the world. Unfortunately, I dont have time to play more than one campaign, so playing an Eberron campaign may be a little bit away. Anyone really think a gnome articier would fit smoothly in the regular Dragonlance world?

Ambient magic is just perfect for artificers, especially the realm of sorcery known as enhancement. And they're great for gnomes.

As for Eberron, I wouldn't mind giving it a try. I could at least play a psion! lol

Yea thats the biggest thing I miss when I play Dragonlance, is psionics. Ever since I say the 2ed book for Psionics, I fell in love with it. I just choose not to incorporate them into my Dragonlance game. While Eberron and Forgotten Realms both have psionics and someone could play in those worlds, if it came down to it, my choice would be Dark Sun. Unfortunately, I dont foresee a hardback book ever for the world, so who knows.

The artificier can work really well when applied to gnomes. Especially since they can have "rudimentary" magic, and yet still do what they love to do, build things. I think it would work really well. I'll probably be giving them the choice to go ahead and be one. But... I'm not sure if any of them will want to take it. The artificier might be a little too much support.. who knows.

I'm inclined to say that if ever there were a gnomish artificer in DL, it would have been Gnimsh. Also, it's important to note that infusions and spells are actually different. Sure they use the same rules for the effects, but I do remember there are important differences between the two (unfortunately, seeing as my copy of the ECS is two states south of me, it's hard for me to look it up).

There's a thread about this very topic a month or two back.

With search disabled you have to be a little more forgiving with repeat threads... I know I've had plenty of headaches searching some of the forums for threads that are a week old.

I would say that it would have to be restricted by the period. If it was War of the Lance or earlier, I would not allow it. But, with how the world, and especially magic, changed during the 5th age and the Age of Mortals, its anyones game. I would almost like to think that when running from draconians at the Order of the Stars, throwing the pieces of the time device and getting the reaction they had would be an artificer type of thing. At this moment I play in an Eberron game, one character in the game is an Artificer (Warforged Artificer to be exact). The only warning I have to any interested in that class. . . Expensive, and I don't just mean in XP.

This poor guy can barely use any of his skills at 1st lvl because he does not have the GP. I am sure he will be more powerful as time goes on, but right now he is being overshadowed by the rest of the group. I would think it would be worse off in DL, considering that Eberron can be a high money, high magic world, and I always looked at DL as low money, medium to low magic (item wise). If you approved it, you may be torturing the player with the lack of items and cash to utilize their abilities.

I would think that the best course of action, and maybe something for Soveirgn writers to consider as well, would be a revision of the class specific to DL. Some changes to make it more functional on the world of Krynn, because it is a great class once you adjust it to the world you are on.
