I have a problem with my group that I hope everyone can understand. We're a rather formal gaming club and part of our by-laws is the fact that the PCs can take a vote on the campaigns they're going to play next.

Their request is to run the Dragonlance Modules again, wonderful, except they'd prefer not to do it on Krynn.

Having run a very long campaign there, I have to ask

"Why?"
"The stories are amongst the best written but....eehhhhh....we know how Krynn is affected if we suceed. We'd like to see how it would affect say....Toril or Eberron."

Basically, this thread if no one minds needs to be done with people who LOVE the modules because I want to make sure I can get the nearest equivalent for the storyline as possible.

It is a fairly "classic" tale after all of evil about to overwhelm the world and good.

I'm not even decided on what worlds to run it on but I hope everyone won't feel annoyed by my asking for help here. I don't think the other settings in question really have the fans familiar enough with the modules necessary.

P.S. I welcome anyone with arguments on why this is a bad idea as well. I hate losing arguments.

Forgotten Realms seems easiest.

Pros:

1. Elminster replaces Fizban easily enough, both are comedic characters.

2. Shadowdale can replace Solace.

3. Pereghost can take Lord Soth's background, Verminard can be Fzoul, Arikan can be Manshoon

3. Bane can replace Takhasis or perhaps a "Axis of Evil" with Bane, Shar, and Tiamat working together

4. Draconians as a weapon can be created in the Great Wastes by the Shade Enclave

5. While far less important, Selune can replace Mishy and be about restoring her ancient religion

6. The Tomb of Huma can become the tomb of Torm

7. Palanthas could be replaced by Waterdeep or perhaps Suzail with the Solamnics being replaced by the Purple Dragons

8. Unther for Nekara

9. Icewind dale for Icewall.

Cons

1. The God dynamic in FR is just ALL wrong

2. Arguably the magic level makes dragons not powerful enough for world conquest

3. The idea of a force conquering all of Faerun just may not be quite enough.

4. The Elves are completely different as well.

I'm not too terribly familiar with Eberron, but it seems to me that it may be a good fit. The idea would be that the Last War would be the equivalent of the War of the Lance.

One thing I would do is to substitue warforged for draconians. They seem to hold a similar role.

I like the idea, though, of taking the classic modules and seeing how they work in other settings. Please let us know how that turns out once you get to it.

In my campaign, I'm tinkering with the idea of using the old Dragonlance Classics Modules for a starting point. Though the politics would have to be thrown out and lots of flavor....the dungeons and the quests themselves could all be very important.

My basic idea at the start is...

1. I’m not sure whether to make the villains at the start of the piece ultimately the Dragon Kyber or the Quori. The Dragon Kyber if he was the person responsible would unfortunately, rather put to lie the distant nations of the gods.

If the Quori are responsible then the ultimate war becomes perhaps a tad less mythic and draconic involvement becomes a bit less understandable. However, the final scene of the gateway being a key to the next universe makes more sense.

I’m rather leaning to the idea that the Quori are impersonating Kyber and tricking the Dragon followers of Kyber in their efforts.

2. Instead of Draconians I’m going to use Warforged. The discovery of a new Last Forge from the Giants results in a dramatic increase in the monsters and a vicious backlash against the Artificer’s house who honestly don’t know where these new war forged are coming from.

It results also in a terrible backlash for any war forged that have tried to make a place for themselves in the past few years.

The discovery of this forge and its destruction will be a major turning point in the war.

3. The heart of the struggle will be the apparent madness of King Boranal ir’Wreland whom suddenly turns different on his activities and becomes a fantastic aggressor against the other nations. He makes an alliance with Darguun plus his dragon armies and declares himself “Emperor of Gallifar”

Boronal is of course dead/possessed and his body is animated by a Quorol. By the time the Pcs can get to him though, the war is too late to stop.

He'll become the Arikan figure.

4. Thrane will replace Solamnia and the Church of the Silver Flame will replace the Solamnic Knights.

5. The Dragons who will fight for the side of the Breeland "Dragon armies" are of course following the Prophecy of the Dragon that has been manipulated by the Quori/Kyber to their own ends.

6. Aerenal will replace the kingdom of Silvastani and Valenar Qualinesti. The only problem is HOW DO YOU MAKE AERENAL CREEPIER!?

7. The High Lords are various scumbags and mercenaries that Breeland's monarch has given incredible power over conquered territories and license to do as they will to subjugate.

8. Lord Soth's equivalent should of course live in the Mournlands, but how the devil do you make a character whose background is as tragic as Bucketheads?

9. Dragonorbs are another issue, the control of dragons just isn't as impressive as it is in other lands.

10. Dragonlances, ditto are less impressive. Maybe 'canons' would work better.

11. Obviously, pretty much the entire "Divine returning to the world" subplot will have to be scrapped.

12. Frostfell can easily replace Icewall.
