#1zombiegleemaxFeb 08, 2005 6:56:13 | Has anyone ever compiled a list of Ravenloft crossovers? What I mean by that is are there any lists that have all the characters that can be found in other settings and exactly which books etc from these other settings reference that character? For instance, Soth I know came over from Dragonlance. I know he is featured in Dragonlance Warriors Vol 6 “Lord Soth”. But what other books or accessories on the Dragonlance side features him? There are also several “crossover” adventures that deal either with Ravenloft or characters the Ravenloft has borrowed such as the Vecna series of adventures. So in an effort to flesh out my library, which other books are there and if there is a list where can I find it? |
#2zombiegleemaxFeb 08, 2005 15:08:26 | Actually, apart from Buckethead, few Ravenloft characters were explicitly presented in other D&D setting material (though I thought I caught a reference to Gondegal in the 3e Forgotten Realms book). In terms of adventures, the only explicit crossovers are Castle Spulzeer/The Forgotten Terror (Forgotten Realms/Ravenloft) and Die Vecna Die!/Vecna Reborn (Ravenloft/Planescape). I'll leave the list of characters whose origins were outside of RL as an exercise for someone really dedicated like JWM or Catman Jim. ;) |
#3zombiegleemaxFeb 08, 2005 15:14:20 | (though I thought I caught a reference to Gondegal in the 3e Forgotten Realms book). Gondegal was definitely referenced in the 2E Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting boxed set, and if my memory isn't as bad as I think it is, he was mentioned in the city of Arabel text. Or was it Suzail? Somewhere in the Dales... A quick Google search turned up this: http://www.sorcerers.net/Worlds/FR/15.php Surprising how you remember useless, irrelevant things like a D&D character's history, isn't it? |
#4thanaelFeb 08, 2005 15:59:14 | A similar thread cropped up on the fraternity recently: http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1794&start=0 Here`s a link to the Fraternity FAQ which lists some crossovers: http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/FAQs.htm#What are the known crossovers with Ravenloft and other official D&D worlds |
#5bluebomber4evrFeb 09, 2005 14:57:01 | Actually, apart from Buckethead, few Ravenloft characters were explicitly presented in other D&D setting material (though I thought I caught a reference to Gondegal in the 3e Forgotten Realms book). Jander Sunstar was referenced in 2 or 3 Realms products as well. And Vecna was in many Greyhawk products, either in full or named via his hand and eye. The domain of Kalidnay is named after a ruined city in the Dark Sun setting, and its comatose Sorceror-King Kalid-Ma has been mentioned in Dark Sun products. In terms of adventures, the only explicit crossovers are Castle Spulzeer/The Forgotten Terror (Forgotten Realms/Ravenloft) and Die Vecna Die!/Vecna Reborn (Ravenloft/Planescape). Actually, Die, Vecna, Die!, was set in Greyhawk as well--the PCs begin there and travel to Tovag Baragu (the mystical stone circle with portals to other worlds where Vecna was banished to Ravenloft) and from there, enter Ravenloft. The Greyhawk module Vecna Lives! describes how Vecna ended up in Ravenloft in the first place. The Greyhawk supermodule Greyhawk Ruins describes the ancient ruins of Castle Greyhawk, built by the infamous mad archmage Zagyg. The castle is made of three towers: the tower of Power, the tower of War, and the tower of Zagyg. Deep beneath the tower of Power (i believe it's room P804 on the map) is a room with a chest on a pedestal. Opening the chest locks the door and fills the room with mist. When the mist clears, the door will have dissappeared and an opening will have appeared on the opposite wall, leading into Ravenloft. The Spelljammer module Crystal Spheres describes the half-elf turned vampire T'laan, who decimated an entire solar system and extinguished its sun (how he accomplished this is unclear--presumably through some powerful magic), then tried to abduct humans from a neighboring star system to use as livestock, since the dead star system he lived in no longer had any natural inhabitants. The module states that T'laan will end up in Ravenloft after the PCs defeat him. To my knowledge, T'laan never appeared in any Ravenloft products, however. |
#6zombiegleemaxFeb 09, 2005 17:10:05 | I forgot about Jander (then again, I have access to few Realms products) and to be honest, I never really considered Vecna part of the Ravenloft setting, the two modules notwithstanding. |
#7gottenFeb 09, 2005 19:44:40 | Deep beneath the tower of Power (i believe it's room P804 on the map) It's P824 Joël |
#8bluebomber4evrFeb 09, 2005 20:51:01 | It's P824 The sad thing is I posted that exact location in an earlier post I had made on these boards, but didn't take the time to check it first. :embarrass |
#9zombiegleemaxFeb 09, 2005 22:48:51 | Jander Sunstar was referenced in 2 or 3 Realms products as well. Oh I just love his character, any ideas which products??? I may find myself tracking them down. And by the way, I was looking a lot toward books that might carry over characters such as Soth although I'm interested in gaming products as well. |

I want to say Villain's Lorebook or something like that, but I can't say for sure that's what they're called. I'm not a big fan of FR, so I don't have them. Mortepierre listed them on these very forums a few months ago, so I would recommend sending him a PM for the info. And by the way, I was looking a lot toward books that might carry over characters such as Soth although I'm interested in gaming products as well. By "books" I assume you mean novels? For Soth, the two Ravenloft novels featuring him are Knight of the Black Rose and Spectre of the Black Rose. He's in a bunch of Dragonlance novels, of course (as that's where he originated). Jander, of course, first appeared in Vampire of the Mists. One or two of the Realms products he appeared in might have been short stories, but I'm not sure. Again, I recommend you ask Mortepierre. |
#11thanaelFeb 10, 2005 4:07:56 | I believe Jander is either in Hero`s Lorebook or in Villains Lorebook. Probably the former. The latter is available for download on this site... |

Mortepierre listed them on these very forums a few months ago, so I would recommend sending him a PM for the info That would be: Vampire of the Mists (novel) - throughout Forgotten Realms Villain's Lorebook (accessory) - pp35-36 Realms of Infamy: Blood Sport (novel) Realms of Magic: The Quiet Place (novel) Realms of Valor: One Last Drink (novel) Children of the Night: Vampires (accessory) - pp6-12 By "books" I assume you mean novels? Eh, thanks for the vote of confidence Soth appears in the RL novels you already named. As for DL novels, I am no expert but methink they include: The Chronicles trilogy The Legends trilogy Tales II - The Cataclysm (True Knight) Warriors series - Lord Soth Oh, and of course, in the War of Souls trilogy in which he is finally destroyed by Mina (after returning from RL to DL) But, as I said, I am no expert in DL novels, so if you want to be sure, ask on the DL board ;) |
#13gonzoronFeb 10, 2005 9:58:37 | Soth makes a brief appearance in Tales of Ravenloft, too. And Jander gets a (dubious) conversion to 3e in Champions of Darkness |
#14MortepierreFeb 11, 2005 1:42:15 | Correct (curse my sieve memory! ;) ) Soth also appears in the When Black Roses Bloom RL module (which is all about him, after all) |
#15zombiegleemaxFeb 25, 2005 11:07:27 | I'll leave the list of characters whose origins were outside of RL as an exercise for someone really dedicated like... Catman Jim. ;) Wow, what high praise, I really don't deserve the comparison. Sorry I didn't see this before now, but I was on vacation in Florida. For what it's worth, I posted a list of (pre-3E) non-native Ravenloft characters on another thread here, the one titled 'Sithicus and FR Lands' or something of the sort. Not exhaustive by any means, I didn't include anything from the novels. |
