What do you mean by dig? Rary was the actual PC of TSR co-owner Brian Blume. Gary DMed for the character, but he never made it above 4th level or so. Brian was one of those responsible for ousting Gary from TSR, so perhaps he may be considered a traitor. Some of the early, post-Gygax Greyhawk developments do seem like digs, particularly the events associated with the Wars.

Ignoring Gary's Circle of Eight and making up a completely different roster of wizards for The City of Greyhawk wasn't a deliberate dig -- that work did try to incorporate elements of Saga of Old City, after all -- though it wasn't the most respectful way to world-build. WG7 was certainly a dig at Gary, and a crass and small-minded one. Not Rary, though.

Does it matter?
Half the names in Greyhawk could be subtle little digs at other people. In what way does it enhance or promote the game to bring them up every few months? Of the ones I know of, I wish I didn't know any of them, and could go back to blissfully thinking the game was all about having fun, not taking cheap shots at other people in your writing.

These things are old. Some of the decades old. Let them lie and die out from neglect, and let the game move on.

I do agree with you Samwise- it doesn't matter either way.

Only thing is, while these things r old...I'm pretty much new to the setting.

And am very curious.

For that's one thing I've found about Greyhawk: While the 'Living Greyhawk' book is mostly story driven in gaming terms, at the same time, it often seems to reflect the 'story' behind the scenes concerning the evolution of D&D...

So verily interested I be...

and wondering as well how Robilar fits into this.

As quoted from another forum:

"The Rary featured in the "History of the Greyhawk Wars" is a dig at Gary, Rob and the old guard by the then principal designer Dave "Zeb" Cook.

Just read it and judge for yourself.

Whatever came after in "RARY THE TRAITOR" Greyhawk supplement is just naively innocent elaboration."

I'm wondering about this...

I think alot of it was digs, but I still think the Greyhawk Wars were alot of fun.
