Expanding Knot Magic

I've been thinking about Knot Magic Feat (taken from Mary Herbert's return of the exile).

Basically I want to use knot magic to make the "Use Rope" skill more useful to players. I would make it a class skill for sorcerers and make it a magic about binding energies together, namely the spheres of channeling and enchantment to think in 5th Age Saga terms. So for example, making a DC 20 check would allow someone to cast charm person on someone.

So I'm wondering, should I require someone to already know the spells they are going to cast, or allow someone to choose the spells they are going to cast when they choose the feat?

For those of us who haven't read the book yet, could you describe more about what knot magic is?

It's a form of magical practice used by one of the Damjatt (a culture from the Tarmak homeland absorbed into the Tarmak society by conquest) in Return of the Exile, usually defensive in nature. Linsha wears a knotted cord belt that protects her from spells cast upon her. It seems to be something you'd be able to cover with an item creation feat. The magic works during the War of Souls, so it must draw upon wild magic to work - or, perhaps, it's like the cord magic of various modern magical traditions in that it's really just a means of diverting or containing magic, rather than being actual magic itself.

Cheers,
Cam

actually, as i recall, it also showed up in this really cool short story featuring sturm and his mother coming from solamnia to solace. Sturm had a rope, and each knot represented a knot of wind speed. it was very cool.

I should have been more clear. I wanted to see if I should make it an item creation feat (in conjunction with use rope) to craft inexpensive magical items of limited utility. A sort of mix between potions and scrolls. They are single use which create an effect, but are not limited to the person.

The other option would be to make a feat that would allow you to cast minor spells without taking levels in the sorcerer class. This would stress the "everyday magic" side of sorcery.

i think it should definately be item creation feat. The rope magic used both in linsha and that short story were definately utility items. Obviously, linsha's was prot_evil, and sturm's was gust of wind.

Well, somebody should write up a feat and send it to the Nexus.

Will do, it will be with "The House of Two Brothers". The sorcerer has a Tarmak wife who is a Ranger. I might look at some other magical stuff too that breaks D&D stereotypes a little bit and dig into styles of magic that evoke the Age of Dreams and ancient societies.
