#1rotgolemMar 09, 2005 8:05:12 | Hi everyone, I'm writing a campaign based in and around a vampire-ruled city. This city (named Suzaphar, for the time being) should be fairly isolated from most of the trade routes or civilized lands, and it should have access to the sea or a big river. If possible, it should be near two warring nations or a place rich with political strife. Unfortunately I have only access to the basic D&D Gazetteer (not Living Greyhawk one), though I'm a subscriber to Dungeon Magazine, so I have access to the new big map. Could anyone lend me a hand in finding a suitable spot on the maps and placing the city in the world of Greyhawk? THANKS!! |

#3rotgolemMar 09, 2005 9:49:57 | Thanks, that's a great resource file!! |
#4AmarilMar 09, 2005 9:55:24 | You're welcome. You might be able to get some ideas from the section titled Blacksplinter. Ferrenan is a vampiric necrmomancer prince who resides in this necropolis. |
#5bdpenneyMar 09, 2005 10:37:37 | Another option is to check out Return to the Tomb of Horrors to see the fabulous landscaping job that was done around the Acererack's tomb. The whole place is ruled by vampires (including what should be considered a Paragaon Vampire). You could broaden the whole thing and make it into an undead mecha situated in the heart of the Vast Swamp. That's about as far from trade routes and civilized lands as you can get. Old Almor would also make a good spot, as would the Medegian lands, which have NO nations of good anywhere near them. Cheers! |

Although I think that after reading through ItU you might as well *change your idea of a vampire city into something else*, I back Amaril's and bdpenney's ideas: The best places to locate such a city would be in the Aerdy East, in Almor or the Kalstrand area. I personally would also add that good places might be the Burneal Forest and the Land of Black Ice (near Blackmoor, you might know the area from a recent Dungeon article), and the lands north of the Griff Mountains (providing some kind of Vikings-against-Vampires- kind of flavour). BTW, check here for a ton of ressources... Wouldn't surprise me if I found you posting here for conversions of the Lendore - Isles adventures next week... http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/modules.php?name=Downloads Also check the official WotC download page *here* http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads and *here* http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b Have fun! |
#7rotgolemMar 10, 2005 5:56:20 | Thanks everyone, I currently have a data overload!! :P Old Almor for political strife, the undead-ruled swamp from RttToH (which I have), the Land of Black Ice area (I'ma big fan of winter-like settings), and the idea of civilized vampires (and their human cattle) vs barbaric vikings... they're all tantalizing!! |
#8rotgolemApr 24, 2005 7:57:18 | Resurrect thread... done! OK, I bring back from the grave this topic of mine to ask you (thy poweful and wise sages of oerthian lore!) some more questions. I finally decided to place the seat of my future campaign in the eastern coast of Frost Barbarians lands, south of Djekul and just north of the border of the Timberway forest. I developed a nice background story of Suel refugees, dark magicks, barbarian hate and (un-)holy crusades, some obscure references to Vatun, renegade mercenaries escaping from the Aerdi conquest in the south, and obviously... vampires. Lots of them, and in different flavors, thanks to the effort of a plane-traveling Academy of Necromancers and a long forgotten Suel demilich. Now, I'm working on the surroundings, fleshing out the wilderness and the few scattered places of civilization around that zone. I plan to have quite a few adventures in the outskirts of the city, and then a long trek up to the Griff Mountains, so I needed some infos about flora, fauna, and climate. And it struck me while flipping through the pages of Frostburn: just how much cold it is in the coast of Grendep Bay? And in the lands between the sea and the Griff Mountains? Would it be correct to use the more "frozen" beasts from that sourcebook? Too much doubt on my side? As always, thanks for youy help! :D |
#9clobberintimeApr 24, 2005 10:50:33 | I would say its real cold, and that in summer its light for almost 24 hours a day straight, and in the winter its dark from december to february, overall good for vampires |
#10ripvanwormerApr 24, 2005 13:59:09 | No question, I'd put it in the Underdark. Probably beneath the Hellfurnaces, near the illithid cities, the White Kingdom of the Ghouls, and the Vault of the Drow. There are subterranean rivers and seas there. |
