*****Before you read on there are spoilers if you have not read the wonderful Amber and Ashes Novel by Margaret Weis*****

Reading the novel which I have not finished they talk about Soth a bit and how Mina utterly destroyed him with the One God at her side. They also talk about Krell which is a death knight also.

What Im getting at is it seem Soth was watered down a bit. But with Soth being a what he is and Krell descibed as "crazy", who would have the upper hand in this battle?

To me, Lord Soth is "THE" Death Knight.

In my eyes, other death knights are only pale copies of Lord Soth.

And more on topic:
Soth has some three hundred years or so of "experience" in being a death knight ... his "substitute" far less.

Lord Soth speaks with the booming, majestic voice of James Earl Jones.

Lord Ausric Krell speaks with the grating voice of Gilbert Gottfried.

'Nuff said. :D

My two cents....

I would have to say Soth.

Part of the becoming of a Death Knight is what you did to become a Death Knight. I think Soth's sins and failures that made him a Death Knight dwarfed Krell's and thus would have some impact in making him the 'eviler' death knight.

Actually, I picture Krell as speaking like one those surfer-guys. He looks imposing, but then you realize he is a imbecile.

My voice for Krell is a stereotypical echoing "bwhahahahahahha" voice. Basically, he has James Earl Jones and Darth Vader's voice just like Lord Vader but unlike Lord Soth....

You realize his dialogue is completely inappropriate to such a powerful figure.

Lord Soth: The plans you refer to will soon be back in our hands.

Lord Krell: The plans you refer to wil...oh crazzap! I forgot to tell Ariakan about the thermal exhaust port on the floating citadel...oh well...will soon be back in our hands.

That said, I don't think Krell is a pale immitation of Soth. The fact he's everything Soth is not is one of the reasons he's so enjoyable. It's like comparing the head of the Lost Boys and Dracula.

"Oh like so dude, I see the Soth-man and I say to him like 'killer dude, wassup' and he's all 'dork out lame-o bogger' and I'm like 'what's with tha atti tude, like chill out beard' and then he goggles me all out and does this hollow voice thingy and like barfs 'find your own wave kelphead' and I just do like 'woah, gonzo' and then he punched me like on the nose and just surfed away. That's like harsh man. Totally insane glue foot man. Seriously."

Lord Ausric Krell was originally created by my brother-in-law, Digger Hayes, and myself when coming up with material for the Dragonlance Campaign Setting. We knew that the Death Knight of Krynn template needed to go in the book, along with a "sample" death knight -- and since the book was set after the War of Souls, it did not make sense to include Lord Soth.

We speculated about the idea of a new death knight for the Age of Mortals, one completely different than Lord Soth. The Knights of Takhisis/Neraka were a great source, since it meant starting with an evil character instead of a "fallen" hero ala Soth. I also thought about what sins are terrible enough to warrant the curse of being a death knight, and how to make such a punishment (which involves bestowing great power) make sense.

Krell's story didn't take long to put together, and I absolutely loved the art featuring his rams-horn helm in the DLCS. But it was when Margaret breathed unlife into him for Amber & Ashes that the character truly came into his own -- a big, dumb undead evil guy. Still terribly dangerous, but still an imbecile.

Soth would wipe the floor with his younger counterpart, no doubt. But with Soth gone, Krell is the death knight for the new age -- assuming that he's still around when the Dark Disciple trilogy is over!

I absolutely love his look. He's truly fearsome in his own right.

EDIT: There was one other death knight in Krynn, although not many people know about him.

Venris Stormshield only appeared in the Dragonlance Book of Lairs as the death knight encounter. Here's my conversion of him:

Lord Venris Stormshield, Knight of the Blood Sword
