#1thorfMar 24, 2005 6:31:30 | Today I posted my version of a revised Atruaghin Clans in my mapping thread. Revising the map to fit with the 24 mile per hex version of the area involved expanding GAZ14's map considerably, and as a result there is quite a lot of extra space to fill up. Currently I have it marked mostly just as extra terrain tiles, but it looks a bit empty. Thus, I propose that we add a tribe or two to each of the Clans. In doing so, I thought it would be appropriate to ask for suggestions. Please post your ideas in this thread, and don't forget to say what Clan each name you suggest is for. |
#2thorfMar 24, 2005 6:32:37 | The original GAZ14 map... ...and my revised Atruaghin Clans map. |
#3gazza555Mar 24, 2005 6:58:00 | I was going to suggest Coyote Tribe for the Children of the Horse, but I see you already have Mountain Lion and Cougar tribes and a coyote tribe :D . How about naming some of the tribes after magical beasts such as griffons, wyverns etc? Gary |
#4gazza555Mar 24, 2005 7:15:23 | How about the Condor Tribe for Children of the Bear. Orca Tribe for the Turtle Clan. If we go for the magical beast option. Griffon Tribe and Wyvern Tribe both for the Horse Clan. Gary |
#5zombiegleemaxMar 24, 2005 7:27:37 | For the Children of the Bear: Hare Tribe. For the Children of the Turtle: Dolphin Tribe, Sea-Horse Tribe, Walrus Tribe. For the Children of the Tiger: Crocodile Tribe (and perhaps Rhinoceros Tribe?). For the Children of the Horse: Hyena Tribe, Mosquito Tribe. |
#6gazza555Mar 24, 2005 7:30:06 | For the Children of the Bear: Hare Tribe. Noooo.... Not the Hare Bear Tribe :D Gary |
#7zombiegleemaxMar 24, 2005 7:34:09 | Noooo.... Not the Hare Bear Tribe :D I suppose you're right... (Rabbit Tribe? I don't know...) |
#8gazza555Mar 24, 2005 9:51:29 | Few more... Mink Tribe - Tiger Clan Chipmunk Tribe - Elk Clan Otter Tribe - Elk or Tiger Clan Skunk Tribe - old Snake clan? Gary |
#9zombiegleemaxMar 24, 2005 11:15:23 | I just have a few doubts over some tribe names you got Thorf... but I don't remember if they're canon or not.. Well, I'll just voice my opinion and say these should be changed in (see proposals): Tiger Clan: Sloth??? -> Viper (the old name of the whole clan according to "civilized maps!" is prolly the name of the most troublesome tribe for the Darokinians ) Piranha?? (HOW THERE??) -> Wolverine Elk Clan: Trout?? (no river signs there!) -> Porcupine Beaver??? (again no rivers!) -> Skunk Turtle Clan: Sea lion -> Whale (it's the Bay of Whales, for Protius's Sake! :D) If these cannot be changed, the names I suggested above are just ideas for other tribes then |
#10thorfMar 25, 2005 0:18:45 | Some great ideas there, thanks everyone. To clarify, the names currently on both maps are indeed the official tribe names. :P More later, I'm a bit rushed right now. |
#11zombiegleemaxMar 25, 2005 9:03:14 | Some changes I made to the Children of Atruaghin (which will be reflected more fully in the HackWurld): Added a whole new macro-tribe, the Children of the Vulture, along the northwestern, western, and southwestern cliffs. They are an evil-oriented tribe, like the Children of the Tiger, and worship their own female vulture-oriented Immortal (whose name escapes me, as I am typing this at work). They live in villages on the cliffs, like the Children of the Bear, though rather than pueblos their villages are all tall, giant cylinders, in which their pet vultures and giant vultures nest with them. They are a combination between Apaches and Gurkhas, reflecting a strong Sindhi influence. The clans are: Jackal, Spider, Scarab, Horned Toad, Dog, Buzzard, Baboon, and Scorpion, in that order, from just west of the Falcon clan of the Children of the bear, counterclockwise around the plateau through to the end of the plains/hills. IMC, the eastern macro-tribe is known as the Children of the Viper, as snakes are common there. The Children of the Tiger was the ur-tribe of Danel Tiger-Stripes in ancient history, which was broken up after his kingdom fell apart, and the survivors formed the Children of the Viper and the Children of the Vulture. the Children of the Tiger remain as an inter-tribal sodality, followers of Danel Tiger-Stripes who seek to conquer all the Atruaghin lands in the name of their evil Immortal. I moves the Children of the Elk off the plateau, into the lands betwen the Viper and Turtle, made all of that territory forested, and added a bunch of rivers (lots of slow, winding, swampy rivers in Viper territory). Note that the Turtle use very little of the land they are on, fishing and living along the rivers of the land, but little else, as they go whaling and fishing out at sea. This gives the whole of the top of the plateau to the Children of the Horse, which makes a lot more sense, as nomadic peoples need a LOT more room to survive than settled peoples. Greatly expanded the rivers on the plateau, and moved the base settlements around. |
#12HuginMar 25, 2005 21:54:14 | Interesting changes there, Mystaros. It's too late to change in my current campaign, but I may try these sometime in the future. They seem to be major changes, but yet are (IMHO) logically thought out. |
#13culture20Mar 26, 2005 20:53:18 | Some other common animal spirits that have been missed: Crow Tribe Dog Tribe Spider Tribe Goose Tribe And just to be a nit-picker: Cougar and Mountain Lion are two names for the same animal (some would add Puma as well). |
#14CthulhudrewNov 13, 2005 3:48:36 | Noticed something interesting while going through old modules today- in X10: Red Arrow, Black Shield, there are more Clans than Gaz14 laid out for us- in addition to the standard ones (Bear, Horse, Tiger, (Sea) Turtle, and Elk), there are also the Wolf and Boar Clans that can be approached for support against invasion by the Master of the Desert Nomads. Since there is definitely more room in the region for more tribes/clans (especially since the plateau had been shortchanged on the Gaz14 map), perhaps we could fill the area with these two clans. I'd imagine the Wolf Clan would probably be in the woods just south of the plateau, perhaps between the Tiger and Turtle Clans, while the Boar Clan might be in the woods along the coastlands? Below the Tiger Clan? Really have to get back to doing more with the Clans one of these days... |
#15zombiegleemaxNov 13, 2005 10:42:34 | I understand that the Python, Chameleon, and Peacock Tribes were established by TSR, but, for whatever reason, I just don't like the idea of having tribes named for animals that are not native to the RW Americas. The Horse Clan I'm ok with, because horses were integrated very quickly into indigenous cultures and formed a vital part of many tribes. My preference would be to replace these three tribes and steer clear of names like "boar," "hyena," "rhinocerous," or "crocodile" in favor of animals of the Americas. I'm also not at all fond of using either Tiger or Viper for the clan in the southeast, but perhaps its best to just let this go and consider this more of a merged jungle culture than an analogue of Central/Southern American cultures. As for the mention of the Boar Clan and Wolf Clan in X10, I would consider the Boar Clan to be apocryphal. Since the Horse Clan is a particularly warlike people, I think giving them two divisions (Wolf and Horse) would be appropriate. Here's my list of suggestions: New to Horse Clan: Raven Tribe ("Crow," I think, is too closely associated with the Absaroka people, although this was my initial inclination) New to Bear Clan: Condor Tribe New to Elk Clan: Skunk Tribe New to Turtle Clan: Whale Tribe New to "Snake" (Tiger) Clan: Alligator Tribe, Vulture Tribe, Anaconda Tribe, Toucan Tribe I would recommend adding several additional rivers and, perhaps, lakes to the map, particularly near the Trout, Beaver, Piranha, and (if adopted) Alligator Tribes. I think it is worth considering that North America has not historically been nearly as densely-populated as Europe. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with leaving some empty space on the map. Even so, here are some suggestions for additional "Clanless" tribes to be scattered around, if you like: Armadillo Tribe, Tarantula Tribe, Peccary Tribe: in the broken lands in the northwest Swan Tribe, Goose Tribe, Duck Tribe, Egret Tribe, Otter Tribe: along water features to be added Chipmunk Tribe, Woodpecker Tribe, Pronghorn Tribe, Turkey Tribe, Jackrabbit Tribe, Cottontail Tribe, Prarie Dog Tribe, Dog Tribe, Spider Tribe, Cardinal Tribe, Blue Jay Tribe, Scorpion Tribe, Porcupine Tribe: pretty much anywhere there is room. |
#16CthulhudrewNov 13, 2005 19:46:57 | My preference would be to replace these three tribes and steer clear of names like "boar," "hyena," "rhinocerous," or "crocodile" in favor of animals of the Americas. There are crocs in the Americas- Crocodylus acutus, in Florida. I'm also not at all fond of using either Tiger or Viper for the clan in the southeast, but perhaps its best to just let this go and consider this more of a merged jungle culture than an analogue of Central/Southern American cultures. The Tiger one has always been problematic, but given the proximity of the Clans to the Mystara India analogue (Sind), I think it works out okay. The Clans don't have to be exact amalgamations of RW Native Americans (in fact, they differ in several ways even in what we know of them). As for the mention of the Boar Clan and Wolf Clan in X10, I would consider the Boar Clan to be apocryphal. How about Javelina or Peccary Clan instead of Boar? New to Horse Clan: Raven Tribe ("Crow," I think, is too closely associated with the Absaroka people, although this was my initial inclination) True, but at the same time the crow is an image that is seen in many Native American traditions, and not just the Crow nation. Raven probably still works, though. I think it is worth considering that North America has not historically been nearly as densely-populated as Europe. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with leaving some empty space on the map. Even so, here are some suggestions for additional "Clanless" tribes to be scattered around, if you like: Yes- this is something I hoped to add/develop- that there are many "non-Clan" tribes and bands that roam the regions of the plateau along the lines you suggest. I was (and still plan to, someday) hoping to create something such as an Alligator Tribe that inhabits the regions in and around the Malpheggi swamp, and as such, technically live on Darokinian land, rather than Atruaghin territory, which creates its own interesting cultural idiosyncracies (mixing with the Darokin population, "reservations", etc.) Armadillo Tribe, Tarantula Tribe, Peccary Tribe: in the broken lands in the northwest Interesting choices. Personally, I've decided that those broken lands are populated by descendants of the Red Orc tribes of Wogar that didn't emigrate to the Broken Lands, and now are a plague on the Sindhi and the Atruaghin tribes (and possibly even the Graakhalians, on those outskirts of the Shadowdeep where the two interact occasionally). In any case, a lot of interesting tribes/bands you suggest there. I think on a larger scale map- such as a 1 mi/hex map (like the one of Morlay-Malinbois in PC4), you'd see a lot more little rivers, lakes, and tributaries like you suggest adding. |
