#1spellweaverMar 24, 2005 11:24:09 | --------------- Campaign spoiler ---------------------------- ------------------ My players kindly keep out ------------------- Has anyone ever used the monster Hivebrood from the old Creature Catalogue in a Mystara campaign? I am toying with the idea but don't know quite in which context. I just think that the idea of a hivemind being able to communicate the ability to cast spells to the entire hive via scents is so cool! :evillaugh :-) Jesper |
#2zombiegleemaxMar 24, 2005 12:26:40 | Well, I've never used it - and I don't have the Creature Catalogue in front of me at the moment, but how about locating it in Ylaruam and connecting it somehow to Barimoor? For some reason I believe the idea of Barimoor's subterranean tunnels mixes well with the concept of the hive... (He does have subterranean tunnels, doesn't he?) |
#3zombiegleemaxMar 24, 2005 12:59:49 | Does Barimoor have tunnels? Does Alphatia have wizards? Where'd the Hivebrood come from, anyway? They were my favourite Creature Catalog monster. They're not listed with any of the modules at http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Dungeon/2967/prodlist.html, so I dunno where they were introduced. BTW, there's a story on the vaults (http://www.mystaranet.jamm.com/vaults/html/hivebrod.html) linking them to Blackmoor, which would imply that if any survived it would be under the Broken Lands or Glantry, or maybe in the Shadow Elf territory. (I like the last two better than the Broken Lands, because the brood are creepier when they're found somewhere civilized.) |

Fun stuff watching my friends run around with flamethrowers and hand grenades inside the Hive, trying to close the Gate to our world … |
#5npc_daveMar 24, 2005 15:36:42 | The Hivebrood first appeared in an issue of Gamemaster Publications back in 1985, I don't have the issue in front of me, but the Hivebrood was described for Basic/Expert D&D, and a small adventure was provided that highlighted their use, in a generic wilderness. From there, they made it into both the Creature Catalog, and Dungeon Magazine #13, the one with the Tyrannosaurus Rex on the cover. Dungeon #13 was set in Specularum, and placed a hive nest near Rugalov, near the Thyatian border. The hivebrood has only recently become aggressive(as of 1000AC) due to Karameikos developing internally. |
