I'm researching my Heldann basic map at the moment. What that means is that I'm searching out all references to Heldann in official materials, which I will then use to make a preliminary "official" map. Afterwards I will probably enhance it using info from the Vaults and such, but I'd like to get the official stuff established first, as always.

For these purposes, I include anything written by Bruce Heard as official, which means his page at the Vaults is included in my primary source list.

In any case, I'm going to post here what I have uncovered so far, and if anyone can find any other official information on Heldann that would help in making the map, please go ahead and post.

Bullet points, if any, pertain to the source under which they are listed.

X11 24 mile per hex map

Dawn of the Emperors 72 mile per hex map

Wrath of the Immortals 24 mile per hex map

Wrath of the Immortals 48 mile per hex map

Poor Wizard's Almanac Heldannic Territories non-hex maps

Bruce Heard's Heldannic Timelines
  • The original name before the takeover begins in AC 950 is Heldann Freeholds. From AC 960, when the takeover is largely complete, the name becomes Heldannic Territories.
  • The capital city of the Heldann Freeholds is Haldisvall. It is taken over in AC 950 and renamed Freiburg.
  • The area around Freiburg becomes the Province of Freiburg.
  • The northern forest is called the Altenwald Forest.
  • South of the Altenwald is a town called Ynvarhøfn. In AC 952 it becomes Altendorf.
  • Also in AC 952, the Province of Altendorf is established, "north of the Naga River."
  • In AC 954, southeastern hills of Heldann become part of the Province of Freiburg.
  • The town of Torgsdal is renamed to Hockstein in AC 958.
  • Skolgrim, a town apparently close to the Ethengar border, is renamed Grauenberg in AC 960. (It is also referred to as a "city" at least once, but "town" references are more prevalent.)
  • In AC 960, the Heldannic Territories has four provinces: Freiburg, Altendorf, and presumably Hockstein and Grauenberg. The Altenwald Forest is the only area not under the Heldannic Knights' control.
  • Hayavik is a village close to Grauenberg and the Ethengar border. It is razed by Moglai Khan in AC 994.
  • In AC 998, construction of "fortified commanderies" in the hills along the Ethengarian border is started.
  • In southern Norwold, bordering on the Heldannic Territories, there is a river called the Heldland River.
  • In AC 1010, the Knights take the southern Norwold town of Forton, creating the Province of Heldland.
  • The same year, Landfall is taken and becomes part of the Territories. The surrounding area becomes the Province of Landfall.
  • Also, the Hollow World Heldannic fortress of Stonehaven is abandoned.
  • AC 1011 sees the addition of Oceansend to the Territories. The surrounding area becomes the Province of Oceansend.
  • A new port settlement called Neuhafen is established on the coast "just east of the Altenwald" in AC 1012.
  • The town of Grunturm apparently keeps its name under both regimes.

I'll update this first post with any extra info you can provide me with.

Don't forget the maps and info on Heldann from X13: Crown of Ancient Glory.

There is also information about Heldann in the timeline from Joshuan's Almanac.

[EDIT] Here's the JA info:

707 AC: Heldann the Brave unifies independent petty kingdoms, names this northern land Heldannic Freeholds.
710 AC: Heldann the Brave breaks the back of the trolls' nation, is poisoned.
914 AC: Toktai Khan of Ethengar repelled at Hayavik- last serious invasion of the Freeholds from Ethengar.
919 AC: Ethengar attacks Heldann Freeholds, repelled.
948 AC: Thyatian emperor grants priests of Vanya the right to emigrate from Hattias.
950 AC: Alliance between Ostland and Thyatis. Heldann Freeholds overrun by priests of Vanya. Freiburg falls; Halvardson family massacred.
952 AC: Siege of Altendorf, last Heldann city to surrender. The conquerors rename the Heldannic Freeholds the Heldannic Territories; the Thyatian Order of Vanya is recast as the Heldannic Knights.
980 AC: Wulf von Klagendorf becomes High Cleric of Vanya in Freiburg.
994 AC: Heldannic settlers move west into Ethengar lands, are massacred.
998 AC: Punitive raids by Heldannic Knights against Ethengarians.

There is also a little bit of info on Heldann in the Ethengar gaz, IIRC.

Not pretending to be an expert in German, but looking at the meaning of the names could be useful for mapping and fleshing out some of these locations:

Grunturm = Green Tower
Altendorf = Old Town
Freiburg = Free City
Altenwald =Old Forest (altenwald forest means Old Forest Forest, heh :D )
Hockstein = Not sure. Hoch Stein= High Rock?
Grauenberg = Grey Mountain
Neuhafen =New Harbour/Port

And some of the "Norse" ones:

Haldisvall: Something, a wall? fort? of Haldis (a woman)
Hayavik= Roghly this could mean Shark's Bay
Ynvarhøfn= Ynvar could be the name of a person. Høfn could mean court/Stead (Hof/Hov) or Harbour/Port (Hafn, Havn)
Torgsdal= Marketplace/Trading Valley

Other interesting ones:
Naga River: Are there Nagas here?
Wulf von Klagendorf: Klagendorf is most likely an area

Interesting! Thanks for the little linguistic lesson, Havard. That's quite useful for fleshing out more locations.

Other interesting ones:
Naga River: Are there Nagas here?

I've wondered about this myself. I don't have any Mystara sources for locations in my monster DB, but I did place them on Davania, the Serpent Peninsula, and the Immortal's Arm. However, such a creature would attract the curiousity of powerful wizards who'd bring them back to their towers. So they could be found most anywhere IMC as a very rare creature.

Here are a couple more, for the coastal villages:

Kaltstein = cold stone
Blauendorf = blue village or town
Klagen = ? (I interpret this simply as a place name, perhaps named after a prominent Knight who took over the area)

Haldisvall - istr that Haldi (sp?) was a Heldanner folk hero, making this "Haldi's town".

That would make sense.

Also, in the case of Klagendorf, I think Klagen means something like to complain or appeal (a decision). I could picture it as a fairly depressing place...
