#3zombiegleemaxMar 28, 2005 21:02:19 | Spelljammer has caught my eye more than a few times, so please, can a D&D "elder" help me, what is Spelljammer, should I buy it, and wht version of D&D is it? Spelljammer is, basically put, D&D in space. Spelljamming ships are powered by magic helms. Most commonly a spelljammer helm is a chair that draws power from a spellcaster and converts the spell energies into the ability to move the ship. Other types of helms exist that use life energy instead of spells, psionics, sacrificing magic items themselves and more. Ships can move between planets. Planets are generally contained as a "solar system" in what is called a Crystal Sphere. Outside of the Crystal Spheres is a region (and substance) called the Phlogiston, or Flow. There are currents in the Flow that allow ships to also travel between Crystal Spheres. Typically people have allowed movement between campaign worlds such as the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance that are otherwise isolated in seperate Crystal Spheres by means of Spelljamming ships. Spelljammer was written under 2nd Edition rules. Should you buy it? That's hard to give an answer to without a lot of additional information. Do you need a new setting? Are you just looking for some new ideas? Do you intend to play it using 2nd Edition rules or 3rd? [Spelljammer was not officially updated to 3rd Edition though a few attempts have been made. But in any case you will likely still need to do some work in adapting things.] How much will it cost you and what additional Spelljammer material will be included with it if any? Will it be a lot of money for you or a drop in the bucket? When I ran it it was definitely fun for myself and my players and that may be all you need or want. If you DO buy it I'd suggest you put together your VERY OWN setting using the rules and materials rather than base your Spelljammer game in any established setting like Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk. Not only would it be a fun exercise in world-building but I personally think Spelljammer rules work a lot better that way. Which is to say that I think Spelljammer works BADLY when combined directly with existing settings like Greyhawk, etc. which were not at all designed with extensive interplanetary travel in mind. Oh and go here: http://home.earthlink.net/~duanevp/dnd/spelljammer/spelljam.htm A lot of the stuff I put there is probably hopelessly dated now but some of it is sure to be useful/interesting if you do use Spelljammer. |
