#1zombiegleemaxMar 31, 2005 4:03:04 | Does anyone know or have any references of the hard to pronounce greyhawk names ie; Iggwilv, tsojcanth, nyr dyv, furyondy, graz'zt, tamoachan and zagyg to name but a few. |
#2zombiegleemaxApr 01, 2005 4:35:22 | Isn't this in the FAQ. It should be as it's one of those perennial questions. IMO: Iggwilv: Ig (as in igloo)-willv (as in Will the name) Tsojcanth: So-J'kanth. Nyr Dyv: Neer Deev Furyondy:Fyoori-ondy Graz'zt: Grazz-zit Tamoachan: Tam-o-chan Zagyg: Zag-ig There's an offical pronounciation guide in the Adventure Begins or the Player's Guide to Greyhawk. P. |
#3TorpedoApr 01, 2005 17:35:57 | I always pronounced Tamoachan as: Tah-mo-ah-chan. |
#4faraerApr 02, 2005 9:44:58 | Most of them are self-evident, barring exact stresses and long or short vowels, which no one will quibble about. Graz'zt can't possibly be "Grazz-zit", though: "i" sounds don't materialize out of nowhere. (Shades of that drow ranger.) |
#5zombiegleemaxApr 03, 2005 12:00:20 | I could never manage "Ehyeh." What, are they Hebrew Flan in Tenh? |
#6zombiegleemaxApr 08, 2005 2:07:40 | Since all of my LG characters are based around the Nyr Dyv, I would have to say that the predominant pronunciation for the Lake of Unknown Depths is "near div" (like the "div" in division). Since the Olman are based on the Aztecs, Tamoachan should probably be pronounced "tam-o-ah-kan". Whether those are correct is up to you |
#7zombiegleemaxApr 10, 2005 5:28:32 | I've wondered about some of these myself. Well, since the name Drizz't is obviously a cop of Graz'zt, it might help to ask how Drizz't is pronounced. (Yes, Ed Greenwood played old GH mods featuring Graz'zt before he came up with FR.) I can offer some insight on a few of these though since there is a (limited) pronunciation guide in the PGG. Nyr Dyv - NEAR div Furyondy - FE ree on dee or FYOO ree on dee (note: the LG campaign prefers the latter pronunciation but this by no means makes it correct) Zagyg - ZA gig |
#8faraerApr 10, 2005 11:50:56 | Ed created the Realms before D&D, years before 'old GH mods featuring Graz'zt' were written. Bob Salvatore created Drizzt (no apostrophe), not Ed Greenwood. It's pronounced 'Drisst'. We don't know whether Bob was inspired by Graz'zt or not. Furyondy is just 'Fury' as the vocabulary word plus 'ondy'. |
#9zombiegleemaxApr 11, 2005 1:58:04 | Ok, while I concede the creation of Drizz't belongs to Salvatore, all you did was set up a straw man by attacking my weakest and least compelling point. Who created Drizz't doesn't even matter. The crux of my argument was simply that Graz'zt pre-dates Drizz't in any publication. He is based on real-world occult lore and the letters "zzt" are simply not a common suffix. It bears mention that the two names both belong to epic characters in D&D who are trademarks of the same company. I'm not even getting into a discussion on whether FR pre-dates GH because it's a moot point based solely on subjective reasoning so don't try to bring it in here. |
#10faraerApr 11, 2005 12:21:54 | Why would I want to 'attack' your argument or set up straw men? I just corrected a few misconceptions -- points of fact, with nothing subjective about them. If your main point is that 'Drizzt' resembles 'Graz'zt', that's true, but whether Bob was actually inspired by the demon's name isn't known, and it doesn't affect the pronunciation of either. |
