#1Band2Apr 05, 2005 16:02:56 | Based on what is in the 2nd Dark Sun box set, we have a good description of Balic. But after re-reading the description I started thinking about a couple of groups that are not mentioned. First defilers. There is no mention of what happen to the defilers that had been in Andropinis's service. We know what happened to the templars, but what about the defilers? Did the merchants attack them, or welcome them into their services? Second gladiators. Anyone know in whose part of the city the arena is located? I think this is important because, the description of Balic mentions that the patriarch of House Wavir wants to free all of the slaves. If the arena was in his section of the city, I would think we would have shut it down. But if it were in another House's section of the city it may still be operating. Has anyone developed either of these for their campaigns? |

As far as the defilers are concerned Intelligence being their primary stat, I think some of them are probably at large and they didn't just go "Hey guys we're the king's defiliers can we work for you dudes". One or two of them could very well have gained employement with the darker merchant houses in Balic, others could be in hiding in Balic or have taken off to seek employment with another SK or with a group of bandits. I recently ran the events of Kalak's demise in my game and my players later had to clean up the mess that one of his Defilers left in his escape from the city and flight to the north. The defiler in question having access to Kalaks palace took off with some of the SK's treasure and artifacts (not yet determined exactly what) and is still at large. As for the location of the Arena. I'd say just choose one of the districts and the nature of how it is run will follow from there, or maybe it's on shared territory.... |

As for the response under option 3, I'd say it would depend on the merchant house and the personality of their lord/lady. House Tomblador would probably be the most open to accept defilers into their ranks, then House Rees and then Wavir in my opinion. |

Beyond the Prism Pentad & The Wanderer’s Chronicle both have entries stating that House Wavir took control of the area between (and including) the White Palace and the silt harbor. In The Obsidian Oracle (p31-33) Tithian stands at a window, in the White Palace, looking out to the silt harbor. When he allows his gaze to drop to the area in between he can see, amongst other things, the arena. So I’d say that its pretty clear from the material, that House Wavir has control of the arena. I’d also believe that (as sad as it is) your hypothesis is correct. House Wavir would free the slaves (gladiators included), and without them the arena would probably cease to function. |
